Hi,

I have got me a Mach II ST to fit onto my thermonuclear 3Ghz Prescott CPU.

Connecting it up I notice that there is a small chip fouling the CPU housing (the one that is screwed to the backplate), has anyone else come across this?

What is the solution?

Can the plate be modded to suit?

Do I have to look at an alternative motherboard? If so which one?

The other question is that given that 1/2 of this chip will be inside the cooling ZONE, sould I be protecting it from condensation? If so what with?

Guys I need your help and guidance assiatnce you can provide would be appreciated.

you can trim the plastic mounting plates no probs, just make sure that the seal string really is sealing the plate afterwards, cover the exposed part of the chip & its legs with seal string as well to make sure no air can get under it.

also recommend you fill the socket with dc4 or similar dialectric grease, that way no change of condensation problems..

Thanks for the quick response and advice, I have done that now but now I find that the ST head will not touch the CPU (Prescott 3Ghz dimensions are teh same as Northwood).

Any suggestions? The unit works fine it just don't touch the CPU when connected.

Just to keep you informed of my progress with this.

Good news is it is all up and running, to get around the contact issue I cut a piece of 2mm thick copper to the size of the CPU (lapped it) and used that as an interface between the head and the CPU. This also has the added advantage of making full contact on both the head and the CPU (as the head connects using those spring adjusted bolts, it aligns itself perfectly).

I spoke to Phil about this - I would post piccies but TBH I only do things to get them to work - my attention to detail is minimal and I'd be embarassed to show the pics - hopefully you ge the idea

lol nice solution, shame i would really liked to have seen a few pics of the problem and solution just for refference. I doubt yuuor rig can look worse then any of mine function over form every time .
