Laing MCP355 Heat!

i was just testing my swiftech apogee gtz for leaks with different barbs on and so i just hooked it up to a pump/res with no radiator out of the case and everything, left it running for a while and everything is now boiling!

got a couple of comp fittings on the block and theyre absolutely piping. never knew how much heat these things produce

surely this can't be good for cooling?
 
The same thing would happen to your car if you didn't have a radiator and fan. If the water isn't being cooled somehow then why do you expect it to keep your temps down?
 
what i mean is, the pump produces so much heat, i don't have the heatsink on anything, its just pump->block->res, and everything has got hot JUST from the pump
 
Thats not right dude the pump should never create that much heat. Run it again and tell me if the pump gets too hot to hold in your hand if it does you may need to ask for an RMA from the retailer you bought it from.
 
uhm yeah i've just been running it again same thing, res/pump->apogee->res/pump...

and yeah the pump is super hot, too hot for my hand. even the apogee is too hot to touch
 
Would be a good way to test. And now that I get what your saying, yea that's a bit weird. I guess the pump motor is getting too hot? Maybe not enough lubrication on the parts inside?
 
well after running the loop with a dual rad with 2 fans on 100% the pump is still super hot

i'll try the other pump, maybe it has something to do with the setup or waddever

i'll report back later!
 
Do you have any pumps of a different kind? This sounds like an odd problem. Wish I was more help with water cooling.
 
nah, just got these 2 swiftech mcp355 pumps, the 18W versions

i'm not sure if this means anything, but when i took the normal top off and put them under the reservoir thing, i noticed that to make them 18W they'd done that fix thing where you bridge over the two connector things? do you know what i'm on about? is this normal for a retail pump?
 
Yeah thats normal dude. They do get 'warm' but never hot. If you bought them at the same time it might be a dodgy batch. It wont have anything to do with the loop.
 
from what i remember when i had the loops going, the temps were alright so i dunno if it affects the temps that much. what you reckon?

i did buy em at the same time from the same shop
 
after a bit of googling, it seems that other people have hot pumps like mine and apparently it's okay?

Ive never had a hot pump, warm yes as Ive said but never hot like you said. Even fans get warm though dude. I think you are going to have to test them as from what youve just sad there I dont think its as bad as you first made out?
 
a few other forums have people talking about how their pumps have been really hot like mine, and how they've had to put heatsinks on and mount them on fans and one guy said it melted a part of his anti vibration pad

someone said they rang up the company and they said it was fine, so i'm probably just going to try get a bit of airflow on it :/
