1000D has image stabilisation on the stock lense and also has fast focus with the USM (Ultra Sonic Motor) lenses
Even without a USM my 1000D locks on in about 3/4 of a second to almost everything.
One of my friends uses a canon, and having used it, I much prefer my dads sony.
If you read reviews, sony always come out very well. Things you have to consider:
Built in Image stabilisation (no matter what lens you use, you will get this, whereas canon you need to spend more on lenses)
Built in Auto-focus (essentially, auto focussing will always be fast, rather than varying with different lenses)
I actually think Sony's produce a better image, although I've not used a canon for a couple of years, my dad did try an a100 and Canon something, found the a100 much nicer..
Sony also make sensors for nikon, so they obviously arent that bad
I'm obviously a bit of a sony fanboy, but they are lovely.
