Is this bad for a GPU?...

They should, at the same time though there is always coldzero. And EK backplates fit with the stock cooler aside one screw.

JR

Yeah i know i've had a look at the coldzero ones i kinda don't like them, IMO the EK backplates look better tho, i'm not sure the MSI is a REF PCB

There is a TwinFrozr V EK backplate. My friend has one on his 970 ;), like I said you just have to leave out one screw from the end of the PCB. You could sort it in seconds with a pillar drill but it works np anyway.

Those MSI boards look good for the money it's a shame they derped like that. It won't hurt the card at all and you could mod it to clear but that's not really acceptable.

JR

Yeah, it's not acceptable... especially when you've spent £500 on a graphics card already, you shouldn't have to really worry about that kind off stuff.

If you were going to mod anything I'd say slice some plastic off the ram tabs!! will only need a few mm to sort it I'd say and it'l be much MUCH less traumatic than taking chunks out of the backplate ;)

Could probably do it with an exacto knife too :) less mess

Haha, +1 on that mod SuB! ;)

I'd rather spend another £50 on a higher end motherboard, rather than modding it and risking warranty and all that stuff... it's just my personal preference regarding pricey stuff like computer components :)

Nice tip though! :)

If you did it neat enough, and before I say it, I totally don't condone it :P I don't reckon anyone would even notice lol

I'd rather do both :p

Well not really i'd rather things look stock and work cleanly to begin with as you say. The best mods go completely unnoticed IMO.

I have a similar issue with my Gigabyte X79 UD3.

With the 480 Lightning in I can't open the memory slots. Bit of a pain but massive card is massive.

i dont understand why they make both sides clips on ram slots. I have had a few boards that only have clips on 1 side. and the other is just a part of the socket and flat, this would mean that these cards would fit; But i still dont see why any one would use the top slot for a 16x pcie slot.
