Is my CPU strong enough?

Hello,

I have a Core 2 Duo E6300 CPU running at 1.86 GHz.

I am planning on buying a 22" with a native resolution of 1680 X 1050,

and a graphics card something like 9800GT.

i'm worried i would get a bottle neck, would i? do i need to overclock my CPU? if so, how much approximately for no bottle neck?

thanks in advance!! :wavey:

Depends what game you play. If I was you, I would try and get my cpu to around the 2.6-3ghz mark. This should give you plenty of power for all but the most demanding of games.

ok, i see buying a new graphics card would be problematic...

what if i buy the new monitor and stay with my old graphics card? Asus 7900GS

it probably can't run game 1680X1050 on good fps... what if i'll change the ingame resolution to something smaller? how will it look?

sorry, i don't understand in this subject :P

Pretty much covers it. The E6300 oc'd has no problem playing games at the resolution u want. When manufacturers are still recommending 3.4ghz pentium 4 cpus (not oc'd) as a minimum spec, anything well in excess of that will be fine.

It wouldn't effect my choice in using a 9800GT. But do realize that, even if u do get lag within ur games, that's what the quality settings are for.

The thing that may hold back the system is memory and perhaps the mobo. The singlest most cheapest thing to expand in a pc these days is memory. Other things being considered, there's little reason to not have 4g and forget about memory being an issue for anything from that point forward.

On a decent board with even half decent ram, the E6300 i had hit 3Ghz stable and i had no problem gaming at 1680x1050.

Cooling was air at that time and temps were not really an issue.

Think i was using a 8800GT when i had that chip.

Would probabably look to perhaps OCing your chip ( we can provide support for that ) stay with the card you have at present and see if the lag clears.

If its still lagging then go with a more powerful card.

by any chance do you know how too overclock and what heatsink+fan are you using too cool the cpu

i don't know how to OC, and i'm using original heatsink+fan i got with the cpu.

it's at about ~45 degrees in rest.

and Lasher, what do you mean OCing my chip? the cpu?

my motherboard is Gigabyte GA-945P-S3 by the way.

Looking at the prices of the 9800gt I wouldnt bother mate, very expensive for what they are (asuming you are buying new).

Id get an ati 4770 or 4850, both sub £100 or for a little more a 4870 or GTX260 for about £140.

When you buy your card and a monitor grab yourself a coolermaster V8 cpu cooler, once you have done all that come back here and we will talk you through how to overclock your cpu.

They're pretty much the same price as 4850s aint they ?

4850's where brought down in price due to the lack of the 4770 :), and ati is your best choice for the price at the moment

Both £80 @ ebuyer atm ??

EDIT: comparing the 2 cards on many sites where the 2 are pitted together, the 4850 is reported to "spank" (which in real un-hyped terms) means it beats the 9800gt at an average fps in the main, even if the min fps maybe less. These are pretty decent test rigs tho. When u take a look at comparative sites like hwbot for match e6300 setups, there isn't that much in it - although u can question the amount of oc'ing the guyz often do there. It'd be a camp choice for me here, rather than how they fair in a i7 setup or something.

woah man, coolermaster V8 is like 75$.

isn't there anything in like.. half the price? :P

also, i'm worried my power supply won't be enough! i have a HEC-400tr-tf. 400W.

how do i know if that's enough?

Xiggy Dark Knight $39.98

EDIT:After looking up your psu,it appears that they have stopped making yours,But tbh I personally would not trust it,If it was a Corsair,Antec or similar then it should be ok

ok, i'm just gonna get the monitor and then see wether i want to upgrade so badly.

thanks a lot, you helped a lot :D

that looks like my true........

looks like my true preforms better.

erm i would choose a 4890 1gb tbh, only £150-160 and i belive a tiny winy lower preformance than 275 but is faster than 260/4870
