Is it worth getting a 7800GTX... or TWO ?

Hey there guys...

I know I will never be in the Benchmarking elite as I have sold my Mach II GT, but now Im on watercooling (120.3) I still want to have a fast ass PC!

The odd bench is sweet, but I only really have the PC for gaming and Music/porn/surfing.

Gaming being the most important of all.

My CPU is a SD3700+ STable at 2.915ghz, RAM I have is OCZ TCCD and now 2x1gb of Ballistix and Graphics is a X850XT @ 570/600.

I'd love a new FX57 or the X2 4800+ but im not sure if ill get much improvement over my Current CPU at its clocks. Wat do you reckon?

I'd also like to get a 7800gtx... or two... i've never tried SLI but wouldnt mind giving it a shot. But as I have a 19" TFT with a native res of 1280x1024 will SLI make any difference to me? If SLI is a waste for a monitor this size, is it worth upgrading to a single 7800gtx?

My plan was to wait for the R520.... but seeing all you buggars with your 3.5ghz FX's and 2x7800's is making me very sad!! :( :(

What say you...??

WIll a nice FX57/4800+ and/or 1/2 x 7800gtx's be a good thing or should i bite my lip till I see r520?

I just upgraded from a 6800GT to a 7800GTX. I would upgrade your monitor though :)

I agree with Nick (I always agree with Nick), get yourself a CRT capable of 1600x1200 games play much better. If you can hold fire, wait to see ATIs offerings if not just join the bandwagon of the impatient (me included) and get a 7800 GTX.

I think the rumour mill says the Ultras wont be released until ATI forces them to show their hand with the R520.

As always, that aint guaranteed (though i doubt they will release it much before the ATI release, the GTX wipes the floor at the moment, so they can charge top wack for essentially what will become their middle end card, and produce volumes of the Ultras maybe so that stock is immediately available, and perhaps work on yeilds with 32 pipes)

lol @ Zax

I heard R520 won't have PS3.0. Kinda random I know but meh.

Buy a monitor then buy a 32pipeline card. I find it very hard to wait hence why I bought a 7800.

ATI have confirmed that R520 is delayed. At a guess I'd say around October.

not with a res of 1280. the X850 is plenty.

if you got a new monitor, id go with 1 7800, 2 in SLI is a waste.

Good discussion this.

IMHO:

There is good reason to go 7800 now:

1) They use less power

2) They run cooler

3) They are definitely the fastest cards out there until at least October

4) Anything faster will be CPU limited

If you are not a fan of SLI, this is the only card you can have that will run all games available now in 1280x1024 with full AA and AF enabled at acceptable frame rates - it also brings in some nice IQ features that are really impressive in Riddick and Far Cry fro example.

Plus if your rig is SLI ready, you can get another card when you upgrade to a 1600x1200 TFT monitor.

Perhaps buying the TFT first will provide the motivation to buy 7800.

Having an SLI rig is great for benching - arguably the most challenging game of all - (I have been doing it for 18months now and I am still doing it!!)

R520 is delayed until October due to low 32pipe yields and ATI's commitment to Nintendo and Eggbox, that October date is a pencil date (assuming that they satisfy their contractual supply contracts and yields improve) - either way they'll be in short supply til after xmas - can you wait??

I know I couldn't.

Totally agree - and with the rest of what you said.

yeah, there wicked cards, im not getting one cause there crap put it that way.

iam gonna miss my X800XT PE, i upgraded from a Ti4600, and it was awesome, there wasn't a game it struggled with at 1600x1200, with the excpetion of Riddick a little.

Hehe i think you got the wrong post?

They are cooler and faster, but with a lack of funds and SLI i dont bench, and to see any benefit i would have to replay a game like far cry, which im not going to do just for improved IQ.

My current 6800GT doesnt run too hot (with a little water helping) and plays games happily, so i know that it isnt too much slower than the GTX, and so my card wont be too much slower than the fastest card around until at least August (which in computer hardware is a pretty sweet and rare thing to know)
