Is 400w enough???

Just about to order some bits and i need to know whether or not my psu will be enough and what problems i may run into if it isn't.

I will be buying an AMD Phenom 2 x4 3.0ghz black edition wiht 8mb cache.

An MSI DKA790GX AM2+ AMD790GX ATX Mobo and some Corsair - TWIN2X4096-6400C5 4 GB (2 x 2 GB) PC2-6400 DDRII-SDRAM PC Memory

All costing me about £275 i need to know if my 400w psu will support it or not?

I will also have a 8800gs 384MB in too and a 500gb hdd and a 500 gb ex hdd.

Maybe a few pci slots too with prob a tv card etc.

Any ideas?!??! I really don't have the money to be shelling out on a new PSU.

Just spotted this little tool on the net and its quite interesting, i input all my details and it only comes up with 306 watt which would be nice seeing as i only have the 400w.

I think it would be wishful thinking though.

If it's a cheap generic unit, no.

If it's a decent branded one, yes, although it will be pushing it if you ever add a higher powered GPU.

I have to aggree with Peter a cheap generic would not be any where near good enough it would also probably take most of your components with it. Your saying it should require about 306 watts so a high quality 500w psu would be a good idea as psu's usually have the greatest efficiency as 50-60% ish load. There is a good review on here: http://www.overclock3d.net/reviews.php?/power_supply/ocz_modxstream_pro_500w/5 according to the review that should set you back 50 quid. Are you working on a budget for this?

Well my first aim was to buy all of the parts except for the gpu and a few other bits, so my initial setup would have been ~ CPU ~ Mobo ~ 4.0g of RAM ~ A decent Case (Lian Li) ~ and of course the PSU ~

But my finances started kicking me in the nuts on different levels so i ended up ditching the idea of getting the psu and case and just stuck with the bare essentials so i could hopefully get up and running and still have a few quid in my pocket.

If there is no way that my 400w psu will do the job and / or it shortens the lifespan or reliability of any of the new components that i have just bought then theres no way i will even power it up with it.

Is there anything i can do to make it more efficient without having to buy a new one?? I mean i've seen cheap psu's which are high wattage but i know they can just be of poor quality, cant believe all this over power??? I mean c'mon ??? it's just a psu, they're not hard to make. Lol.

Anyway, I'm a little stuck now and i think im just going to have to buy a new one.

U sure it'll damage the components though???

Thanks for responding.

hx620??? Nah m8 im not spending £100 on a blooming power supply, sorry no.

Thanks for recommending something but i did say i was not looking to buy a psu at all.

Nevermind £100.

That color power supply is being reviewed by someone who thinks his PC runs faster with a new power supply...

The issue with 'generic' power supplies is the long term. While they may seem to work properly in the first few months they can damage components with unstable power. We recently had a thread on here of one harddisk a month dying, turns out it was the power supply delivering too low voltages.

Yes you can go for the cheaper option but it's a gamble. It would be better to wait a while before you upgrade and do it properly than running the risk of blowing up components with bad power.

Thanks for that, I just can't believe that companies can sell Power supplies (or anything else for that matter) which actually break your sh*t?? I feel like taking one of these power supplies and well....... getting one of those people who tell you its good and sticking it up their......... well...... nevemind.

So ok, surely there must be a power supply which is relatively cheap, as in £25 - £30 ????

Sounds silly but i resent paying over the odds just for a power supply man. its nuts.

Hey Diablo do you mean this one????

http://www.amazon.co.uk/OCZ-500W-St...4SRE/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1248730982&sr=1-2

Looks ok to me, Plus its only £39 ?!?!? might be within me price bracket.

Didn't mean that one I was looking at the next model up:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/OCZ-ModXstr...FD4U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1248731436&sr=8-1

But that psu ain't lookin to bad, :anisx: hav also done a review of tht and it didn't score to badly: http://www.overclock3d.net/reviews.php?/power_supply/ocz_stealthxstream_600_watt_psu/1

So if the stealthextreme is within budget I would go with that over the 30 quid multicoloured pyke generic :p but if you can opt for the modXtreme.

All i need to know? will it do the job?

I dont want it to die on me and cost me my rig.

I will literally go to the company and kidnapp someone lol.

The PSU's aren't guarantueed to kill your rig, but there's an increased chance, especially when it reaches its maximum load.

Still need Jim to do a roundup of cheap PSU's to show what can happen *hint*hint*hint*

Like suggested, a 500-600w mod/stealthxstream would be good for that rig, even with headroom for upgrades. A PSU doesn't outdate so it's good to have some.

Oh and btw, there's a little button at the bottom of each post that says "edit". If you click it you can add other things to you posts. Very useful avoiding double posts :) Or whatever 6 posts in a row is called... :p

Yea i got it now, cheers for your responses, im off t bed, see ya's later.

And thanks. :) (lowest form of wit)
