I’ve never really been a big fan of Apple products. They are overpriced ($1250 for a 512GB SSD FFS), overrated and most ideas aren’t that revolutionary as many people think (the Tablet-PC was introduced in 2002 by Bill Gates and nobody gave a shit, in 2010 Steve Jobs introduced the iPad, and the world it’s pants in excitement). Though there is one thing Apple makes that is just unbeatable on that platform. The Media-Players, or how apple calls them: iPod. You have loads of different iPods. Shuffle’s, Nano’s, Classic and of course the iPod Touch. The iPod Touch is by far the most popular one. It’s just like an iPhone, without 3g and you can’t call with it. Though it has Wi-Fi and you can use it for many things, like browsing the internet, playing games from the App Store, listening to music, chatting, calling via Skype (with Wi-Fi), make photo’s and much, much more. With this, Apple got my attention. As soon as I had the money, I got the 32GB version. Today, after using this device for almost a year, I’m gonna give you guys an in-depth view of the iPod Touch 4th generation 32GB.
The Box
Let’s start of with the box, and we can all say, it looks AWESOME! Small Form-Factored, but sleek and pretty. I really like the design of the box. I really, really do. I have some pictures, but the quality isn’t great. The camera is an casio exilm ex-335.
The iPod was in the box like this:
Of course, it was being hold into place. There was a kind of sticker over it with the picture of the standard home-screen on it. After struggling with getting that thing open, I had another struggle with the plastic thing that was in the box. You had to whip it out really. I just used a calliper to whip it open.
Here you can see the things that were in the box. I don’t think I still have them manuals, or them Apple-Stickers. When I find them, I’ll add them as a photo later. Anyways, here are them pics:
Of couse, I wanted some accessories, so I bought a usb to plug adapter, a case and a 3 meter long charging cable.
I got that cable via a friend of mine who has his own webshop. Not sure if he ships worldwide, but if you’re interested, just ask me and I’ll find it out for you.
The Device itself
Now that we’ve seen the box and its contents, lets move on to the device itself. The device itself looks extremely sleek if you’d ask me.
This thing looks good! I really like the looks of this device! It looks good, and it’s extremely thin. I hear you thinking, how thin? Well, this thin:
As you can see, this thing is really thin! I’m amazed by how thin this is, it’s only 7mm thick. This device has a 3.5” Retina display, which is amazing!. On the screen you can also see a front camera which is used for facetime and for making pictures and recording videos.
Of course, on the bottom of the screen we can see a home-button.
On the top we have the Power-On/Off Switch which can also be used to lock the device (sleeping mode).
On the left side we have the volume-buttons. What would an iPod be without those? (An iPod still is designed to listen to music, even though we use it for all different kind of things).
And on the bottom we have the Speaker, the 3,5mm Headphone Connector and the Strange Apple Input which you can use to charge the device.
Finally on the back we have the Apple Logo with “iPod” underneath it, the texts that indicates the capacity of the drive and ofcourse the back camera.
The back camera isn’t really bad, it can record in 720p, but it still only is 0,7 Megapixel.
Now that we’ve talked about the Device itself, lets dive into the features of this thing, and I can guarantee you, this device has a lot of features.
Features
The iPod Touch has a LOT of features, and I’m gonna talk about the most imporant features and cydia. So not everything. If I would, I would be explaining more than 500000 apps. Well, what are we waiting for? Let’s dive in!
The UI
Let’s start of with one of the most important features of all features. The UI. The UI is really clear and easy to use. It is simple, but looks good. I really like the UI. Of course, the UI is the standard iOS UI. So iPhone or iPad users will know what I mean when I say: the UI is great!
Facetime
Facetime is a really cool feature, although I hardly use it. FaceTime is a video chat service. You can use the cameras of you iPod, iPad or iPhone to talk to each other, and actually see each other.
To call someone, simply select a contact and tap on his e-mail address.
FaceTime is a cool feature, if you are into this kind of stuff. I don’t use it a lot, because I prefer face-to-face contact IRL. But if you are a fan of video chatting, then why not?
Safari
Don’t get me wrong, because safari is a great browser, but it’s not good enough. Bear with me for a second and I’ll explain why. Google Chrome. Yes, Google Chrome is now on iOS. Exactly. Safari is great. It’s simple, looks good and is pretty usable. But it’s not Google Chrome. Google Chrome is a lot faster. Even on iOS.

Google Chrome:
iTunes Store
The iTunes store is a virtual store where you can buy music and movies. It’s really that simple. The interface is clear and easy to use.
To buy music, link your iTunes account with a credit-card or just buy iTunes Cards, which are basically pre-paid cards. This is handy for kids who don’t know a lot about buying stuff online. They would keep buying and buying with a credit card and the costs would grow pretty fast. Here is an iTunes Card.
App Store
I’m pretty sure everyone knows what the app store is. If not, the name says it all. It’s a store, where you can buy several applications. You have free apps, not free apps, big apps, small apps, awesome apps, really stupid apps etc. The App Store is featuring over 500 thousand apps. So there will always be an app which you will really enjoy using.
Here are my personal favourite apps:
Plants vs Zombies:
This is a game in which you are in a zombie apocalypse. You have to plant plants in your garden which will do all kind of things and they will eventually kill zombies. This is a great app for anyone and it’s really addicting.
Heroes vs Monsters:
A really cool game. In this game you play with a team of heroes who just roam around the map training and killing bosses and monsters. Really, really addicting.
9Gag Mobile:
This app let’s you browse 9gag, ‘nuf said.
Google Chrome:
Now on iOS baby! Easier to use and looks better than Safari.
Cydia
Cydia isn’t really a feature which comes with your i-Device, but you have to jailbreak your device to get it. Once you have jailbroken your device you will automatically have cydia. You can browse cydia for all kinds of cool tweaks and modifications for your iPod (Not the hardware, the software of course). It also lets you browse for all kinds of themes, with modified icons, lock screens and more. Jailbreaking does void your warranty, but isn’t harmful at all if you do it correct. Jailbreaking is really easy to do and you won’t regret it for a second.
Camera
The iPod Touch features two cameras. A front facing camera and one on the back. The one on the front is a VGA-camera with pictures in VGA quality and videos in VGA quality with up to 30 FPS recording. The one on the back has 0.7 Megapixels and a resolution of 960x720. The camera on the back can record videos in HD 720p with a speed of up to 30 FPS with audio.
Display
The display of the iPod Touch is pretty good. The size is 3,5” (diagonal) widescreen. It is a Multi-Touch screen and it has a resolution of 960x640 at 326 pixels per inch. The graphics look amazing on this retina display, which means that games look amazing on the iPod Touch. This screen has the highest resolution on an iPod Touch yet.
Technical Specifications:
Now that we have talked about the most important features of the iPod Touch, let’s talk about the technical specifications.
The iPod Touch features an 1GHZ Apple A4 processor which is underclocked to 800MHZ, an 8GB, 32GB or 64GB flash drive for storage (which you can’t expand with micro SD cards), and 3,5” retina display at a resolution of 960x640-pixels, an Three-Axis Gyro, an accelerometer and an ambient light sensor, an 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi Adapter, Bluetooth 2,1+ EDR and a maps-location based service. Furthermore the iPod has two cameras, the front one is VGA quality and the back one has 0,7 megapixels and 720p video recording. The battery lasts when listening to music for about 40 hours, and when watching video’s this is about 8 hours. When browsing the internet it’s shorter. The iPod has a 30-pin dock connector, a 3.5-mm stereo headphone mini jack, a Built-in speaker and a Microphone.
Pro’s:
-Like an iPhone, without the phone
-Easy to use
-Apps
-Looks great
Con’s:
-Expensive (overpriced)
-processor underclocked 20%
Conclusion
The iPod Touch is a great device. It’s easy to use, really handy, has a lot of features and when you have it, you’ll use it every day. The only thing is the price, because it is really expensive. But for that price, you get an awesome device.
Score: 91/100
