Forgive the laziness of copy & pasting this from my original post on the Inside Sim Racing forums, but I'm hoping that maybe my OC3D brothers across the pond might have some insight for me.
Update with most recent shipping quote:
I've done online quotes for the following:
The seat in question:
Shipping specs are 135 x 55 x 60cm and weighs 20kg.

So I am in the process of building a formula based 8020 rig loosely based off the one Dave Kirkman posted on the forums a while back. I'm at the point where the biggest thing holding me back is the seat. I have a G-Force creafoam seat mold kit just like you'd use in an actual race car chassis, but my problem is making the mold/plug of the cockpit. I have the basic shape and design done in MDF, and have started the long and slow process of applying layer after layer of bondo/putty to give the seat the proper inside dimensions. I knew it would be a lot of work and probably a bit over my head, but wow, this is going to take forever! I recently came across a company called ACR Simulators based out of the Netherlands that sell a "F1 Gaming Seat" which looks like it would be perfect for me, not to mention saving me at least a months worth of work! At $380 US this is a steal of a price considering my original plan was to fiberglass the mold myself, that material alone was about $220. The time and effort to finish the mold properly, and only THEN start the process of fiberglassing makes me feel like the ACR seat might be an excellent option to just bolt-in and go racing.
Here is my problem: After emailing ACR Simulations I was told they will ship to the US, but that I am responsible for the pickup and shipping. I've done a bit of searching and haven't been able to find a quote for anything under $790!!! WHAT?? That is almost twice the price of the seat itself! I know international shipping can be expensive, but does anyone know of anything cheaper than hundreds of dollars in shipping charges?? The dimensions including packaging are 135 x 55 x 60cm and 20kg. Can any of my fellow sim racers help me out? I'm dying to get this rig up and running, just not enough to pay an outrageous sum just to have a box shipped! It's either this, or back to the bondo & orbital sander....
Update with most recent shipping quote:
I've done online quotes for the following:
- InterCargo $335.46(US) (254.08 EUR) - This is the cheapest I've found so far. $270US + a $45 pickup fee. Online reviews for this company suggest I look elsewhere though.
- UPS Air Freight Consolidated (Non-Guaranteed) $414.72 (US) (312.41 EUR)
- DHL Express Shipping ~$900.00 (US) (680 EUR) - Still waiting for them to send me a freight quote.
- FedEx International Economy® Freight $1453.72 (US) (1101.05 EUR)
- A few other small "cheap international shipping" quotes from a quick google search. Most of these are quoted between $700-1000 (US) (530-755 EUR)
I've never had something shipped internationally before so I'm still shaking off a bit of shell-shock at how expensive it's turning out to be!! haha
