Intel Tuning Plan - Anyone used it yet?

For anyone who hasn't heard of it - http://click.intel.com/tuningplan/ - For a small additional fee, Intel will send you a new CPU if you fry yours while overclocking it.

For those who have, have you used it yet? Interested to hear stories.

To be specific, has anyone used it to replace a 2011 chip yet? And if so, did they send you the original stepping or a C2 chip? I'm wondering if it's worth the £25 or so to get a C2 stepping chip. Mine seems to be a bit of a dog (am an overclocking n00b, but can't get mine past 4.2GHz for love nor money).

In other words, you want to pay $25, to go and puts 6 volts through your chip to fry it, just to get a new, hopefully better one?

I think that offer is only open in America? But i'd imagine they'd send you a new one if they have any left in stock

Something like that...

But seriously, if they do send out the new stepping then I'd hope they'd do it for a non-fried chip just because its borked by factor of not having VTd and such.

I can't find anything that says exactly what chip version they will send, but I expect that they would send an Identical chip to what you send in because it requires your processors serial number, so they will know exactly what version you have...

This is a quote from the legal agreement

"NY AND ALL DISPUTES ARISING UNDER OR RELATED TO THIS PLAN SHALL BE ADJUDICATED IN THE FOLLOWING FORUMS AND GOVERNED BY THE

FOLLOWING LAWS: FOR THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, CANADA, NORTH AMERICA AND SOUTH AMERICA, THE FORUM SHALL BE SANTA CLARA, CALIFORNIA, USA AND THE APPLICABLE LAW SHALL BE THAT OF THE STATE OF DELAWARE. FOR THE ASIA PACIFIC REGION (EXCEPT FOR MAINLAND CHINA), THE FORUM SHALL BE SINGAPORE AND THE APPLICABLE LAW SHALL BE THAT OF SINGAPORE. FOR EUROPE AND THE REST OF THE WORLD, THE FORUM SHALL BE LONDON AND THE APPLICABLE LAW SHALL BE THAT OF ENGLAND AND WALES. "

Obviously it lists all the places where they will allow you to purchase the plan.

In the faqs section it states this

Q20) Are there any countries where the Plan is not for sale?

A20) Yes, there are several countries where the Plan cannot, for legal reasons, be sold. These countries are Burma (Myanmar), Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Sudan, and Syria.

Hope that helps

HEY I just re read the legal agreement, and It actually says that you can purchase it as long as your processor is still covered under your original warranty! sooooooo, that means that you can still buy it up to 3 years after purchase, and it runs out the same time your standard warranty does... so if you bought your processor 2 years ago the plan will only be valid for 1 year and run out the same day as the standard...

I will go back and edit my previous post

Cool, that just leaves me with the small problem of where to actually get it.

Does anybody know where i can in the uk?

Chris

You can get it from Scan, under Laptops/Ultrabooks (for some bizarre reason) there is a Warranty & Insurance category, currently only Sandybridge and Sandybridge-E processors are on there.

Got an email back from Intel today. Says:

Thank you for your inquiry to Intel Customer Support.

Under the Intel Performance Tuning Protection Plan, valid CPU's will be replaced following a like for like scheme. This means you will receive exactly the same replacement CPU as the original CPU.

Don't think it gets much clearer than that. No up-stepping, which I'm quite disappointed about, especially seeing as they went to market with a CPU that they knew had features missing. Not that I'll probably ever use VTd, but still...
