Intel Skylake i5 6600K & i7 6700K 1151 Z170 Review

Absolutely!! Still hoping someone can answer my original questions? See below:

"Re-watched the video. Several weeks in now after release, is it safe to say the i5-6600K vs the i7 is indeed the best one for gamers?

My biggest 'concern' is coming from the i7-2600K. Upgrade will be out of necessity due to my motherboard being on its last legs. And although I would favour the i7-6700K, I have a hard time warranting it's price vs the i5-6600K."

Most current games and where we are right now I'd say the i5 for gamers and it been a more cost conscious option.

For a more future proofing build then an i7, and with you coming from a i7 2600k already, you might miss the little extra power the i7 hyper-threading provides and with the consoles of the PS4 and Xbox one using the eight-core Jaguar cpu's sooner or later they want to get the most use out of those core's counts, even though those cpu's in the consoles are substantially weaker than the Intel offerings.

That's what I've been contemplating to the letter. I could opt for the almost 50% cheaper i5, and if the i7 proves to be the better option in the future it's successor may be better priced and I could jump onto that. This might also be the best option because I'll have to buy a bit money-conscious this round, hence my difficulty with warranting the i7's double-the-price price point to myself.

The countless benchmarks that various sites have done to review both the 6600k and 6700k will give you the answer to that. :p

I myself went for the i7-6700k purely for that nice high 4GHz stock clock. It means the performance at stock is so high there's really no need to overclock, which suits given I'm not much of an overclocker, and I like to keep my CPU and motherboard for a long time - 2/3 years+. But I'm sure an i5-6600k would have done the job nicely for me too.

Having upgraded from an AMD FX-8350, it's been a worthy upgrade.

That must have been a heck of an upgrade! Nice!

I did look at plenty reviews, however there are only a handful I rely on - Tom's for one, and digital foundry did a couple great ones on YouTube. They show how well the i5 keeps up with the i7 in games, although the latter provides some better stability here and there because of HT.

However user input about real gameplay can't be beaten and is very useful, I find. Hence my asking. But I understand that predicting the future, well, is just that.

I think I've just argued my own case ha ha

It had better be, it's the most expensive CPU I've ever bought, but then again it is the fastest one too. :p

I mostly game on my rig, and I can say CPU dependent games do run a lot smoother, GTA 5 is an example. So there's that, although anything else I do like Music Production doesn't need the CPU grunt the 6700k offers.

Frame-times are really the thing to look at there. I don't know if there's any difference between them.

But yeah, if I were you I'd just get the i5-6600k, a decent Z170 motherboard and call it a day if you're budget constrained. Anything I've ever seen with the whole i5 vs i7 argument, the feeling is that you won't notice the difference between the two.

Ha ha yeah I can imagine! The same must be true for TW3 - if you play that.

I think there's little difference in frame time between the two, at least in the digital foundry videos where they attempt to make the CPU the bottleneck, although the i7 offers a bit more stability in that department in certain specific, but few, scenarios.

So I have to agree with you; in my scenario that i5-6600K would be the best choice, and I can put the difference in price in for Pascal and a 1440p monitor in the future. And if/when I need it, can always grab a Kaby Lake i7 if it's well priced.

Hold out, some of the shops I am watching have due dates for late next week. The price is only so high right now due to limited stock. I am already into 3 weeks of waiting and watching prices rise.

What goes up must come down.... So they say. At some point hopefully in the next couple of weeks but then just after there's black Friday on November 27th

Yeah the shops here have been having the same in a few days due dates for weeks now lol

What's black Friday? I'm from across the pond so we don't have that.

Black Friday is a Big Sale kinda like Boxing Day sales, There is another sale too not sure if it's the Monday or Tuesday after Black Friday maybe some Americans can answer that.

Not sure if The Netherlands has Boxing Day in other words Boxing Day is the day after Christmas Day.

In Australia at one point they were trying to get Black Friday going here too.

We have two Christmas days, and two easter days in fact, no sales on either. Not like yours anyway, sadly. Overall there're few tech deals on new tech here imo. I wish we had similar deals as overclockers.co.uk offers.

The big sale after Black Friday you are referring to is called Cyber Monday:)

It's not really special anymore, BF and CM that is. Most companies start on the 1st of Nov now a days with amazing bundles and slashing prices. Kinda ruins the day of it all, it's less special. I know that specifically on BF and CM though they have exclusive deals that add just a little more than otherwise would be with the other sales. I do know that consoles tend to get the BEST deals in the US. I know MS started one on there site for a couple days where you could get a XBone/6 free fames/2 controllers for the standard retail price.. sold out in less than 12 hours I think.

Yeah i couldn't remember if it was Cyber Monday or Tuesday, These sales aren't really that good now cause Stores always seem to be having Sales theses days, But rarely here where there's a Sales on Tech tech unless it's on a Clearance lol

I think MS is planning on opening a there first MS Store in Aus. Hopefully that means you could go there and get products in tech that aren't priced up by an extra 400 aud:p

start a dedicated thread in the OC subforum and list your exact specs including cooling.
