Intel DX79SR Mobo Graphics Card Compatibility Issues?

So in my efforts to build "The Juggernaut" gaming system, I've hit a snag.

I purchased a gigabyte Radeon HD7970 graphics card, and the mobo shows an "E6" or "6E" error. The system halts, and I have to reinstall my old geforce 4850 to get any type of display. I thought of returning the 7970 in favor of the Geforce 670, but I've read other's had similar problems, and intel techs telling them to replace the mobo  I can't return the mobo because I bought it on flebay, and the guy says since it's been opened it's a 25% restocking fee, +$25 to cover their 'free shipping', and I have to pay for return shipping (total bs)...

Since I already had everything setup, I'd prefer to ask you guys if this really is a compatibility issue, and if so, what graphics cards are compatible w/ the DX79SR. I've been anxious to get this build done now for the better part of 3 weeks, so thanks to any who can offer some advice :(

Apperently the board is compatible with the 7970 series http://www.3dmark.com/3dmv/4460076 , maybe just your 7970 that is having issues, try another bios if you can, maybe even try another 7970 bios on the card....

Thanks for the heads up. This is my first computer build (well build from scratch), so it is possible user error.

I'm still going to return the 7970, and upgrade to the nvidia platform as opposed to the AMD. Instead of just the one, I'm going to go all out and get 2 of the gigabyte gtx 680 cards. I'll be using it as a gaming PC, and will also be running a 30' HDMI cable to my big screen.

Does that look like a good build, overkill, underkill? Interested in what your opinion is. TIA! :)

and how did you search 3dmark to find that? I've been trying to search previous performance builds w/ the i7-3820, intel dx79sr, and gigabyte gtx 680 and can't find squat using google. Just a giant list of hall of fame entries that don't show the mobo.

Try the card in a friends system to see if the card is faulty. You dont really get compatability issues anymore
