Intel Coffee Lake i7 8700K Review

IPC is NOT the be all end all. That fact seems to elude most people. If you get Ryzen's memory speed up, with tight timings, a sub 4Ghz Ryzen chip can hang quite well against Intels supposedly "superior" offerings, even when those are OCed to 5Ghz. Even in gaming. Mind Blank did a video on this not long ago, and it was quite revealing. Of course, it goes against all the other YT vids on this coffee lake chip, which doesn't surprise me in the least. Makes you wonder doesn't it?

Nobody is saying IPC is not the end all be all?
However it is a massive factor into CPU performance and with today's software, IPC is king. Add in the fact that Intel CPUs clock much higher than Ryzen, it does indeed have more IPC and again today's software is more focused on low threads/high clocks.

Another however, one thing to note is yes IPC is king, but does it actually matter? That depends on the person. If you are aiming for 240FPS, yes. If you are aiming for 144FPS at a higher resolution? Not really unless a specific game prefers Intel or AMD.

I thought the ipc had been given a bump clearly its only a 7700k with 2 extra core's....

That is exactly what it is. 2 extra cores and a couple more MB of cache.

I'm on the fence at the moment as my 7700k clocks at 5.1ghz at 1.36v so will I see any real benefit in gaming at 1440p on my 1080ti if I was to upgrade to the 8700k especially as it might not clock as high

That is 1 of the reasons I got an 1800X and Crosshair VI mobo as I know I'm good for Zen+, Basically a refresh of the 1600/1600X/1700/1700X/1800X for much higher clocks, Performance etc..... and Zen2 as well as the Zen2 refresh, I have a clear upgrade path which to me is a huge selling point.

That's the exact reason I went with Ryzen + Crosshair VI myself. Got a cheaper CPU with a nicer board myself so I can upgrade to an 8-core chip when Matisse / Zen 2 comes around in 2019.

I remember a few months ago an overclocker by the name of Elmor managed to clock an 1800x at 5.3GHz using LN2, and it broke the world records in Cinebench. I imagine if AMD manages to improve Zen to the point where they could clock to 4.5GHz or higher with decent cooling, AMD would have a very competitive platform for years to come.

Unless you do other stuff than gaming, i dont think its worth it.

Same. 1600X + C6H. Then 8-core in 2019. Saves me €200 not having to buy another motherboard.

Elmor works for Asus. :) He's also one of the main man responsible for the excellent BIOSes on the Crosshair IV. Love my CH6 too!

9920 at the moment. I haven't heard good things about the later ones, like 1701, so I'm staying where I'm at for now, maybe until the next round of AGESA updates.

Yeah, I've heard mixed reports about 1701. Some have said they're finally able to stabilise a 3.9Ghz overclock with 3000Mhz memory, but others have said it's completely trashed their frequencies, and some have reported other issues as well. But to be honest, no BIOS has been categorically a fixer for all for everything. I'm not sure what BIOS to try first.

Nope, dont even bother.

Not sure why anyone would upgrade a 7700 to 8700 anyway even with the extra cores. It's not an evolution in architecture, and definately not blowing everything out of the water.

Gaming wise, anything over 4.4ghz shows no benefit. My 7700 clocks at 4.9 stable with 1.26V but I just dont bother anymore. Prefer to keep my loaded CPU @ 4.4 and a comfortable 55C and prolong its life :)

In my opinion, you have a very comfortable setup with a 7700k, 1440p and 1080ti. I have the same. The only thing that would upset it now, is a very pointless, and unnecessary upgrade itch.

Yeah that itch can be terrible :D, I've decided to stick with my current setup till either AMD or Intel release something that isn't a refresh.
