So it's the end of the day: there are, literally 0 8700K's in the entire country and only a handful of boards (with insane prices). Both that CPU and the Apex have an estimated 10+ days to come into stock. It's abysimal and not a launch, worse than Skylake. Sorry but I'm giving this the finger until things become reasonable and actually available, what a letdown as I had plannend on building it Saturday.
Nice review Tom, thanks!! I have some 3333MHz RAM incoming for an Apex or Hero board (very likely the former) and if I don't use XMP but just set it manually, as I like to do, won't that prevent the SA and VCC to auto rise?

Personally I don't think it would be. At 4k in games you're heavily GPU bound, and a 5930K is still no slouch when it comes to other activities. It's only behind in IPC and clock speed. I wouldn't pay €400 for a CPU and €200 for a good motherboard just for that.

Absolutely not. Total side grade. If you want to upgrade then you want at least ten cores IMO. Threadripper or something on X299 if you really can't bear to have AMD in your rig.

Thanks for the advice chaps, I'm just at that point of wanting to upgrading my CPU because I've had it for 2 years, (wow only 2 years, that has surprised me,(just checked amazon) I thought it was about 4) there just no satisfying some people. LOL
I'll wait another few years, the CPU only runs at about 60% on all cores for Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Wildlands so that is fine for me.
Just waiting for the MasterCase H500P now and bang 4 x noctua 200mm fans in there

Your CPU is more than fast enough. There is very little difference between the bottom of the pile CPUs compared to the very top end ones. Maybe 20 FPS more, but when you are hitting 90 FPS who cares? GPU grunt is still the most interesting and exciting thing. I'm also not certain of this but wouldn't going Coffee Lake actually lose you lanes? I mean that's why you bought a 5930k over the 5820k right?

Indeed but I have, in a sense downgraded, to one GPU now, so no longer the need for so many lanes, however it is difficult to let some of them go.

If you've got the upgrade itch, that's cool; we all get that. But I agree with Alien, if you insist on upgrading—which again is totally fine—I would say you're better off with an 8 or 10-core from X299. Otherwise it's just a side-grade, a very expensive one.

This is what happens when a launch is brought forward; no actual stock. There's only 3 Dutch shops taking pre-orders still with no estimated date other than '2017'. Same for the Apex (no price listed). I'm still gutted tbh after waiting for months. Cheapest I can get it is at 389 Euro (455 USD/347 GBP), just unsure if it's worth a pre-order at that price or not.

Agreed. If you wanted an upgrade you'd need to step up that core count to at least 10 cores to make it worthwhile. If you are just gaming than there is no point in upgrading.

I have to agree with you though , since i decided to get involved with pc scene we have had a turmoil of upgrades and changes , competition is good don't get me wrong but as you said maybe Intel should have waited the few months to release a complete package , rather than bits , only a newbies perspective

Certainly looks like a nice upgrade for quad core folks. Not for us Ryzen folks though.
Agreed, Nice product but it would have to surpass Ryzen in a HUGE way in every department for me to want to run and buy it.

I'd be annoyed too, like I was with Vega. It's one thing to have limited stock, but to have no stock in well developed countries is frustrating. It really does appear to be a paper launch to quell consumers from buying Ryzen CPUs, even if they have to wait three months before they can actually upgrade. I find that cheap and below the belt, but I do understand that it's par of the course. I've also read that review samples are able to overclock better and 5Ghz with retail samples will require even more voltage in general.
I expected €389 kind of pricing so it's not bad. A 5Ghz 8700K can easily keep up with an 1800X at stock so it's not a bad price really.
