Just wondering if anyone could help me out.... I overclocked this Cpu to 4.8gz, 1.42v, and im getting OCCT temps Ideal 40c, 76c at full load. What im trying to understand is, for this cpu and the rig that i have set up is it normal for the temps to be at 76c? This Cpu likes its volts at 1.4 and up, anything less than that, running at 4.8 wont be stable.

CPU- Intel 3970x
Motherboard- Asus Rampage 4 Extrem, water block/watercooled.
RAm- Corsair Dominator 32Gb
GPU- Quad SLI 690's
Case- Corsair 900D
Storage- Raid 0 Samsung 512Gbs 2 ssds, 1TB WD Black Drive and 2Tb WD Black Drive
PSU- Corsair 1200watt
Display- Samsung 27inch 2560by1440
Cooling- 4 alphacool radiators, 13 fans, Ek rez, 2 pumps
Keyboard- Corsair K70
Mouse- Corsair M65
Sound- Sennheiser 363d

it's a hexacore at 4.8ghz, yea it's gonna get hot, but still manageable. if the temps worry you you will have to decrease the overclock.

As long as the temps are under 80c i don't mind. So you are saying that this is normal for a six core processor? I would love to know other peoples opinions on this matter, who are running a 3970x, or a 3960x?

I use both of the above along with a 3930k, in normal use I run mine @4.0 and only wind them up when needed. In answer to your question, when you run them with a big overclock they can get quite warm. If you don't really need them to run at 4.8 you will save a bit on the elec bill running it slower 24/7. At 4.8 or 4.9 mine are probably using about 325-350watts.

I was experimenting the other day with my 3970X @4.9 plus 3 x 290Xs and my poor 1200w corsair PSU could not cope.:D:cool:

Im running it at 4.8, and also have a corsair psu 1200w and quad sli gtx 690s. They are coping just fine.. I don't run this pc 24/7, its mostly a gaming rig. I definitely should check out the power usage for this rig, is there a software which i may use??

Something must be wrong then because Ive benched 4 GPU's and a massively clocked 3960X on a AX1200 - it was only pulling 1050 from the wall......

As for the temps in the OP - its fine. Even on water 70c is normal with a massive overclock.

Thax Tom your the best... By the way sorry for posting this thread in a different forum, wont happen again..

The 290Xs when overclocked have a very high powerdraw. I have used the same rig with three overclocked Titans (1100 watts at the wall) and did not have any problem.

I have also run the same rig with a couple of Matrix platinum 7970s overclocked and was pulling 910 watts at the wall.

When I get time I will measure how much a couple of 290Xs and an overclocked 3970X pull at the wall.

A 1200 watt PSU for the above is fine for two GTX 690s, I also use the same for mine and the most I have measured at the wall was 1032 watts. This is my 690 setup.

don't B.S. us!

Two GTX690s in SLI contains 4 GPUs, which is why it's referred to as 4 way SLI. It's sort of an ambiguous area when discussing it though, so it could be confusing. You can only have a maximum of two GTX690s in SLI anyway, since any higher than 4x SLI is not supported.

could have two more to fill up the spaces...
aesthetics are important you know

Lol someone would need a serious amount of cash to have two aesthetic only 690s. It's the type of thing 900D quad Titans guy would do.

Temps are what I would expect for those volts tbh. I wouldn't recommend going over 1.4v for long use really as you are stressing your chip hard.

If you dropped the speed to 4.6ghz you might be able to get your volts and temps down to a nicer level and that would prolong your chips life with very little performance loss. To give you an example my 3930k is running 4.6ghz at 1.336v 24/7 and it maxes under ibt at 72C on a H100 at medium speed fans.

One quick question why a 3970x and 2 gtx 690s for a gaming rig?
