Installing Windows 8.1

Hello. I was about to install Windows 8.1 when I got to this point...

Am I correct in thinking I will loose everything if I go ahead? I don't want to have to reinstall every program and game after the upgrade. I realise it wont delete my files... but I don't have anything I care about stored on my computer anyways.

If I'm right it seems stupid. Other OS's I've used just update and leave everything else intact. Is there anything i can do?

Really? That's not how the panel on the right reads dude?

This is the problem I have.

At first I understood it like dugdiamond, but after reading the panel it says that only data in "users" is preserved. So that means all my programs will get deleted.

I have no idea what to do.

No not really. It's a free upgrade so I thought I'd do it. Slight performance increase etc...
Maybe if I put it on a USB and boot from it I'll have more options?

EDIT: After putting the ISO on a USB stick I have the option to "Keeps Windows settings, personal files and apps"!

Note that it was still loaded inside of Windows and not from boot.... Weird :S

i upgraded from win8pro to 8.1

i chose the keep option and EVERYTHING was kept.

it kept all software and their settings; all games and gamesaves; all my user docs; even the layout of my metro tabs.

the only thing i had to do was reconfigure the settings, and fix a few drivers.

Are you upgrading from disk?

If you have Windows 8 alread you should be able to upgrade through the Windows Store from within Windows 8 and it will keep everything as it is anyway.

At least that is what it did for me, I didn't have to change or reinstall anything it just upgraded me from 8 to 8.1 and kept everything exactly how it was before I upgraded.

Go to the Windows Store on the start screen or just type store in search.
In there it should show the 8.1 update, just click that and it will do everything for you.

For whatever reason I was unable to do it through the store, so I just downloaded an "illegal" copy and used my serial to activate it. I only saw the option to keep everything once it was written to a USB stick :S

After the install I got the black screen with cursor issue, so I booted into "safe mode with command line" and ran "sfc /scannow" which fixed everything.

All good now

I saw a few people posting about not being able to upgrade through Windows on other sites as well, must have been a bug.

well i have just updated, everything seems fine still have all my file,games and programs.
