Installing Vista x64

Please Help !

Been trying to install vista64 for about a month now...

At first the installation would not get past the 'collecting information' stage and kept asking me for drivers for my optical drive. I searched the net for days and only managed to find 2 instances of firmware, neither of which were any good. The stupid thing was that when I admitted defeat and went back to xp86 (32), my dvd drive had dissapeared and I still couldn't install drivers - ended up re installing xp !

Then, upon recieving an install disc from microsoft msdn site for vista64, I managed to get through to the installation part only for it to crash at 22%. This was followed by a restart of installation and a crash at 23%, followed by (yep you guessed it) another crash at 24%. About an hour later it then had the cheek to ask me for the fecking optical drivers again !

I've had a look at the official support list for optical drives in vista64 and my Lite-On (whatever the f*ck it's called) is listed as being compatible.

What I don't understand is.....

1. If vista64 needs drivers then how in the hell did it read the disk up to the 22% part ?

2. Why do i even need to install drivers in the first place ?

I understand that there is a lot of information here but please, please help.

I don't suppose that your trying to install Vista x64 with 4Gb or more of RAM are you as that caused a load of problems for me when installing. You need to drop down to 2Gb then get a certain hotfix (which Vista doesn't automatically get) once installed before adding extra RAM.
