So, i just bought a new Graphic card and even though i am somewhat of a noob i know i managed to install it correctly.

But when i boot the system i get a loud whistling noise.

Anyone know what the problem might be and how i could fix it ?

PS : If this is in the wrong forum please move it to where it should be =]

By whistling do you just mean a very high pitched whine?

If so, a lot of GPU's do that

If the temperature's OK and everything looks right I wouldn't worry

Ya that's pretty much it. But it's really annoying =/ will it go away and there's no risk at all of damaging the card or the PSU ?

I mean it's the first time i heard such a noise and i just instantly turned it off again.

I had a few cards that did it

If it doesn't blow up don't worry

Your power supply is up to supplying the card with power I presume?

sure you have but have you plugged the power cables in??? is the PSU Powewrfull enough for the card and does the screen dispay???

okay so i have my PC opened up and tried installing it again

I have a 450w PSU which supposedly should be enough according to Nvidia website.

I connected one of the cables to the PSU and the other to the vga ( i think well its the only place i can plug it in )

I put the port converter and plugged in my screen and turned on the PC.

Same whining noise, and no screen , when i switch the Screen port to the normal plug i get a normal screen ( noise never stops ) so im guessing the pc isnt reading the card.

Not sure , here's what written on it :

FOCUS

Model : P4 ATX-450w

AC Input :

230V AC 50Hz 3.0A

Fuse Rating : F6.3A 250 VAC

DC Output (MAX)

+3.3V +5V +12V -5V -12V +5VSB

26A 32A 18A 0.5A 0.5A 2.0A

good or not enough for my card ?

its either the fan spinning too fast and you would have to lower the fan speed or the fan is broken, my mate had this problem and he rma it and got a new one perfectly fine, so you may have to rma it.

Im having this same problem, Just got a new base system, ran out of budget, so I had to get an ugly cheap case+PSU, The PSU is some omni 500w. So, I put it all together, and I get the same high pitched sound. After taking off the fan/heatsink from the card, it was coming from a little "speaker" on the card.

After abit of research, I read somewhere that some people with an earlier model, was saying the sound meant there wasnt enough power getting to it.

So, Would the problem be I need a better, proper PSU?

EDIT::

Also, This sound happens when the card plugged in and the system is on, when the sound starts, the computers power button is unresponsive. The only way to shut it off is with the switch on the PSU.

Yeah the buzzer on the card is there to tell you that either you forgot to plug in the PCI-E power, or the power going to the card is not enough.

PSU's included with cases are generally the worst ones you can possibly get. Depending on what graphics card you purchased, look for a solid 500w model from a well known manufacturer (Antec, CoolerMaster, Corsair, Silverstone, Be-Quiet...etc) at a prices starting around £45. Even if it means living off pot noodles for a few weeks :p

Thought it would be something like that. Ill go to a computer place someone told me about tomorrow, and see if theyve got anything. I was thinking about keeping it until I got my trustfund money, and using an $85 9500GT in the meantime, but if I can get a PSU for that price, itll be better. As I would have a propper PSU, and a better card.

Ill let you know how it goes.

Thanks, And sorry for "necro'ing" the thread. It was the only thread I could find in google with the same problem.

EDIT::

Think this would do? The "specifics" suggest it.

EDIT2::

I got a 550w gigabyte PSU today, as the OCZ one was too far of a drive away to get for a few weeks.

The card works fine now.

Thanks for the help.
