Idea thread / build log

Gary's NZXSPC Build Log has him painting his GT's. (link).

EDIT: Ninja'd

And yes Aurora is not recommended for long term use, not even by Mayhems themselves.

yea but here we are back at the painting problem :D i literally have no equipment for that :(
too bad the aurora stuff is only for show :( what about pastel coolant?

i ran into a problem which most likely will make me change the color scheme. there won't be a mid - high end board in blue. So my current thought is to change the color scheme to white rads, white fans, gunmetal gray case, yellow ram, board, LEDs, pastel yellow coolant. not sure about the sleeving yet.

Anyways, i will keep an eye on the gigabyte and msi boards as soon as we get full reviews and i already looked for ram and this is what i came up with.

4x4GB
2133MHz
CL10
1.5V

Other than that there really is only Avexir RAM, which is stupidly priced, i could get dominator plats for that, and it's 1.65V which isn't the best idea either.

what about pastel coolant?

Sorry, I completely missed that one :(

Anyway, I've read from quite a few people that they've been running pastel for months or
even a year without any problems whatsoever. Others seem to be having massive problems
with it. So it appears to me that it can work well, but it's a bit of a crapshoot.

This sounds intriguing, I shall keep an eye on it. ;)

i know that TTL's black pastel coolant turned poo brown, but i think black is a color that often disappoints. wasnt there a trooper build using yellow pastel coolant on here?
also the build will most likely be delayed till autumn, it really depends on when i will be able to sell my old parts. i will get the mainboard/ram/cpu in summer though.

Yes, paulstung's Phantom Bee, which is now in a trooper. See here.

no that one doesn't use pastel coolant. the one i mean is already a few months old. i remember some picture with a snowman and a banana penis i think. too bad all of the subscriptions are gone.
/edit
nope that was the black and orange z77 build. not the one i meant. it must have been earlier this year, about february. was a coolermaster/cmstorm case with pastel yellow coolant
/edit2
found it! here or this one here
it's actually not yellow, it's green. color blindness fml.

i missed out on it as well, but there was a thread announcing it. they redid some database stuff afaik and the data loss was inevitable.

Yeah I figured it was something like that. Haven't checked the forums as rigorously as usual
in the past week due to finally getting busy building my new rigs. :)

I just noticed that my email inbox was suddenly suspiciously quiet, so I checked my subscriptions,
and lo and behold, they were no more. :o

Ah well, first world problems I'd say.

My dreams have been shattered for the second time. The RAM isn't available anymore.
So basically there is no yellow RAM left. wat do.
I will most likely do some sort of a compromise and get black RAM, can't ever go wrong with black RAM. Opinions on CL9 1.65v? I am looking at the Corsair Vengeance Pro Silver.
/edit
for some odd reason caseking doesnt have the mpower board yet, mindfactory doesnt sell msi in general and amazon is overpriced. gg.

What about buying naked RAM and buying seperate heatspreaders? They won't be yellow, but you could easily spray paint them before placing them on the RAM.

i sadly have to announce that the second part of this build will have to be postponed for approximately half a year. maybe even more, depends on how things turn out.
to be honest, watercooling doesn't have much of a practical use for what it costs, so i will focus on what makes this rig essentially faster and better to use.
The Corsair Vengeance Pro 16GB silver 2133 CL9 RAM is already here, so are the Seagate Barracuda 2TB, the thermal paste and the Palit Jetstream GTX 770 4GB (had to return the 670FTW). Unfortunately either the Mpower board or the 4770k are broken, so i had to return those as well. For the same reason i delay the waterloop i decided to settle on a 4670k instead, i will have a need for the extra threads, but not now, maybe in 2 years and until then i will probably have new parts anyways.
So what's happening now? I am waiting for the 4670k and the Mpower board which i expect to arrive this weekend, then i will finish the build in my current case, pray for no broken CPU/board, make everything as clean as tidy as this midtower allows and then post pictures.
Instead of saving up for the waterloop i will use the money i didn't spend on the 4770k + a couple more euros to buy a new keyboard, my current one causes me pain after a couple of hours, membrane keyboards are no pleasant experience. I would've ordered a new KB already, unfortunately the one i want (Leopold Tenkeyless Blue unprinted caps) is not in stock and has no ETA either. For the price i pay i want the details to be perfect, no settling on the second best.
After that i will get a 120Hz monitor, my old Hanns-G secondary monitor makes weird noises and i wanted 120Hz for a long time. Unfortunately finding one for less than 300 Euros is making me struggle pretty badly, there is literally no vendor with a decent Monitor filter system.
See you with pictures of the build hopefully this weekend if my severe case of bad luck doesn't prevail (5/5 orders had to be RMA'd this year).
cheers.

watercooling doesn't have much of a practical use for what it costs

As somebody who absolutely loves water cooling I have to fully agree on that one.
Price/performance is miserable at best when it comes to W/C (at least in the setups
I've come across).

It might have made sense 10 years ago, but since the advent of tower coolers with
heatpipes W/C really doesn't make sense from an objective POV in most cases
anymore (and some of those non-reference GPU air coolers are pretty damn nice
as well nowadays). Unless you do some crazy overclocks you can run a very nicely
performing rig on air without too much noise these days.

Of course you can get some benefits from W/C (besides the fun of playing around
with it), but the additional cost is nowhere near proportional to the additional performance
IMHO.

Anyway, just my personal opinion on the subject. I still love W/C, but I would never claim
my tendencies to be reasonable and objectively justifiable. It's just something I really,
really
want. :D

Still looking forward to this build. :)

Oh i really want it as well, but if you only have the funds for a BMW you shouldn't buy a ferrari and therefore don't eat for a week :D
It's really hard to explain why i spend so much money in the first place, for what i do this rig won't make much if a difference, but it's just something i love. It's impossible to explain to a non pc enthusiast, but i bet you thought the same more than once with the sr2 and the titan

Hm, only a week? You must eat some very expensive food...

Interestingly, I did actually finance quite a bit of my machine by saving money on
food. I mostly just dialed back the amount of meat in my diet (I eat a lot of meat,
so that saved me quite a bit of money).

Aside from that, I also cut back on other hobbies, such as going for long car rides
in my car (which I used to do a lot, just for fun).

Oh yes. Luckily most of my family are also quite interested in technology, so they
are not so much of a problem. In fact my dad seems to be quite enthusiastic about
it.

But when I tell "normal" people how much I've spent on that machine I usually get
something between ridicule and downright derision. Ah well, such is life...

it was just an allegory  the point came across, that's all that matters :D

even i get that quite a lot even though my system isn't even that expensive. to be honest, if you break it down to maths we pay less than the average party pals. pay 1500$ once for a rig and it will last you for 2 years, party every weekend for approximately 25$ a day will cost you way more.

Very true, and in all honesty communication and language would be so much more
dull and boring without metaphors, allegories and all those other nice linguistic
decorations, at least IMHO. :D

Agreed. Even though my rig will be pretty damn expensive by PC standards (leaving
servers and professional workstations and everything up from there aside),
there are lots of very popular activities which consume way more money.
