IDE or SATA

I need a big hard drive (200GB/300GB) for a PVR box.

Any pro and cons between ATA and SATA in term of noise, performance, reliability?

The only difference is that SATA cables are smaller :)

But seriously, reliability & noise will be the same, and if you go for SATA/2 you might get a bit of a performance increase. Look for a drive with NCQ if you can, that bumps performance a bit.

SATA all the way... IDE hard drives are nearly becoming a thing of the past. You can find SATA hd's for less than IDE hd's these days.

No cons switching to SATA from IDE, I say go for it!

Even I can vouch for SCAN :) Bought our Xeon rigs case from em and they shipped it next day, perfect service!

You might not think that sata cables been small is that much of an advantage, but it really is. My stupid IDE's got in the way all the time till I got some rounded ones . Thanks to asus to not giving me rounded ones in the first place.

Considering there litraly the same price give or take a few squid, it would be stupid not to go SATA.

I would have to agree here, wiring up the SATA drives is so much easier with smaller cables - they have nice connectors too :D

If your M/B supports Sata then go for it, but if it does not then you will have to get a PCI interface card to use the SATA drives, this should not be a problem if the drive will only be used for storage, but if you intent to boot from this SATA drive then you will have to install the SATA drivers from a floppy when installing WinXP.

I have used both SATA and PATA drives and can't see a real speed hit, there obviously is because of the data transfer rates, but i have never felt the hit.
