i7 running at 98-99C

I have an evga x58 motherboard with an i7 920 cpu. I've used arctic silver 5 as directed from the website, and i'm using stock cooling. I haven't overclocked the system.

In windows, realtemp is reporting 98-99C on all cores, and in the bios, the cpu temp is reporting 85C. In the bios the "system" temp is only 32C.

Any ideas on how to fix this or what could be causing the problem? I'm scared I'm going to burn something out.

If you were running at 99c the pc would have shut down.

Is the program you are using to test the temps up to date or some thing off a cover disk ..

there is no way your cpu is 99c it would not work at all esp a core i7 your software is incorrect.

while you at it take a screen shot of this for us ...

I can't post pictures until i have 15 total posts or more on this website...

my information is correct....if you want screenshots, let me know your email and i can email the jpgs.

I doubt the program is reading the temperatures wrong. I'm using realtemp 3.00 to get the numbers. I also used a second program called hwmonitor to get very similar numbers. Finally, the BIOS reads the cpu temp as 85C+.

1) Apply tim again and make sure it is only very very thin.

2) check you have fitted the HFC correctly and i mean check that all the retaining pins are pushed down all the way.

3) double check ever thing.

4) leave the side of the case off and keep an eye on it

if you are still getting this problem after all that and you are using the standard equipment check for a bios up date on your mother board what ever it may be.

If there is a bios update install it and then check temps again.

If its still doing it take your pc to shop and check it out because that is not normal and ive never seen a core i7 go to 99c and if it did it would have been dead by now.

The only reason for getting temps like that is normally user error. or the bord you have is not working correctly or a duff chip. But i doubt the chip is duff.

The best way to test this is to touch the heatsink when the temp is supossidly 90oC. If it isn't warm/hot then it most likely isn't 90oC.

I tried running prime95 and doing a stress test last night....about 10 seconds in, 3 of the 4 cores were at 100C, and the cpu had throttled down to 1100mhz

I bet its the cpu cooler isnt mounted properly, one of the clips wont be located properly.

system temp is either ambient or mobo temp matey not cpu.

1st thing is to make sure that CPU cooler is on properly and you havnt use too much AS5

Really simple question, and it sometimes can be overlooked, but have you checked the fan power header is plugged into the motherboard, and that the fan is spinning? I have built one or two systems and forgot to plug the header in and realised when the CPU was getting toasty.

so i ended up getting ****ed at the machine and ended up taking everything out of the case and disconnecting everything....i then put everything back together, and it now works with temperatures down to around 40-50C idling. I guess something wasn't plugged correctly or mounted correctly, but it's fixed now. Thanks for the help everybody!

Good to hear but unfortunately you may have all ready caused damage to ur CPU running it that hot.

Only time will tell.

I hope nothing is wrong with it though.

well yes hopefully.

No one here or any ware will be able to give you a answer to that right now. Like i say only time will tell. That sort of heat can all so damage your main bord as well if your unlucky.

Causing you chip to go so hot causes many smaller Glitches from simple things like random locks up , memory access errors and so much more. If your lucky none of this will have happened. 99c to me is far to hot for a cpu and normally from what ive seen in the past they burn out. If your was at that temp just consider your self really lucky that you still have a cpu right now.

How ever all so on the other hand if nothing has happened to your CPU you have got one hell of a good cpu in you hands.

Just keep an eye on it dude as the silcone in the cpu can start to degrade.

If it does then as long as you bought it from a decent retailer then you should be able to RMA it. Just dont mention the fact you didnt fit the cpu cooler properly ;)
