i7 4790K Dangerously overheating, 60 - 70 Degrees Idol

It does sound like your motherboard is giving a duff reading. Have you updated the motherboards bios? It could be a known bug with a known fix. If you can identify the sensor see if it's covered.

If you still need convincing buy a cheap IR thermometer and check the temperature of the heatsink and area yourself.

If i was to update the bios while the computer is running and it cuts out half way through will that damage or mess up my computer...

------------------------------

Use HWmonitor and make sure your motherboard is running the latest BIOS to run temp checks - OCCT or Prime95 will help you load up the CPU

Also look up our manual CPU voltage guide

Everything is running up to date but it still cuts out... should i just return the motherboard to the place i got it from so they can run tests and replace if needed, they have told me i can do that :)

------------------------------

Where is the CPU cooler plugged in? Is it on the CPU fan header on the motherboard? Because the cable seems to run up to the top of the case.

Those temperatures at idle in your last shot look absolutely fine. I suspect a faulty motherboard.

Yes its on top of where the cpu is placed xD i suspect that to :) thank you

------------------------------

Everything in the pics looks fine and those idol temps for an air cooled rig are pretty good. When you are in the BIOS and the bios temp readout says it's in the 70C+ range then i would suspect a bad motherboard. Only because everything else looks normal.

The PC probably turned off after the last link(as you said) because the bios was probably reading a higher temp and forced it to shut off to "protect" the cpu. I'd try getting a return then a new board.

Thank you, ill have to wait untill monday before i can send it off properly, but i want people to keep posting over the weekend just in case theres just a problem i can sort out by downloading or playing with settings, if i do send it off and get a replacement ill keep everyone posted :)

You can flash the bios. If you did it while it was on it would be through Gigabytes software.. not sure if they have it but it would do it for you. USB stick with the bios on it would flash it.
