I7-3930k Overclocking

Hi im stressing at 46x100 for 4.6Ghz with 1.36v temps reach about 81C on the hottest core rest are around 75C is that normal shall i try for a higher overclock?

Just enable it in BIOS? Also, what heatsink are you using, those temps are very high. Try lower voltages. I am running my 3930k at 1.385 volts under water.
 
im using a waterloop with 2 7970's and this chip on 1 360mm 60mm thick rad and 1 120mm rad.

intel speed step is enabled its just not doing anything.
 
ok i found out if you set the memory speed and timings it stops speedstep from working WTF i regret going intel this board and cpu is pissing me off the BIOS is temperamental one minuet it lets you in the next it wont. The Q-fan for the cpu fan sped doesnt work just keeps at 100% all the time, i never had 1 problem with my amd cpu!
 
You're getting over 70C on water?!?!? That's far too hot. You may need to clean your loop and reapply thermal paste.

lol wtf. The only problem I have with my board is that speedstep won't work. But heh. I have an asus maximus IV extreme. What baord are you using?

It's still relatively new technology. There are bound to be issues. Have you tried updating your BIOS?
 
Formula x79 temps are down to 77C now with reduced voltage.
whats the max temp for this cpu it maybe high cause i have 2 GPU's OC in the loop too.

tjmax is 91C I would stay away from that lol.
Anyway you bascailly got the board just below mine as to say. I personally updated my bios to the latest which really makes no diference. Guess we will have to wait for the next bios update

Those temps are really high. I have a 3930k at 4.6ghz and the hottest core is only 72C average around 66C. I am running a H100 cooler and the fans at medium speed so I can drop it by 2-3C more if I bump the fans up but they are ridiculously loud so I stay away from that.

The forum is having some minor transition issues at the moment and some people are not logging in. There was 2 hours between your two posts give it more time because people do not be on forums 24/7. I have not logged in in a few days because of the problems accessing the site with the false virus warnings and such.

As for speed step I just enabled it on my sabertooth x79 and speed step works fine for me at 4.6ghz. On idle the cpu is around 1.2ghz. Are you sure your enabling it correctly?

I am not very knowledgeable about water cooling but I would have thought you would need at least a 240mm rad for your gpus. Maybe thats why your temps are so high is because your rad area is too small or your fans are not blowing enough air through them. What fans are you using and at what speeds?

Perhaps contacting your motherboard supplier directly or see if the speedstep is a common issue. Maybe you just got a bad board. As I said I have mine clocked to 4.6 and with speed stepping at 1.35v in bios and 1.336v in cpuz on full load with my sabertooth.

There maybe a setting your your not doing right. Perhaps posting what your changing in the bios and your overclock settings may help to diagnose the problem better.

I believe your board is faulty or possibly user error because on mine I have my CPU overclocked, my 32GB of RAM at 1866MHz (CAS 9) and SpeedStep is working perfectly.

Also go in to the Power Options in Windows and make sure Balanced is selected so that the CPU can clock down when it isn't under high load.

I think i have it partially working now it downclocks but windows seems unstable the sidebar doesnt appear and the bottom right doesnt seem to update will try restart also how can i get the voltage to scale with it i have it set to manual do i have to use offset?
 
In all honesty, I'm not surprised that your CPU is so hot - a 360+120 isn't really enough for two overclocked 7970s and an overclocked 3930k, and the CPU is always going to be the hottest component anyway.
Also, do you have to set your RAM manually? Is there no XMP option? If so, does XMP also seem to stop SpeedStep from working?
 
Now windows take ages to load the sidebar and any windows service like system restore takes ages to load and the sidebar and the start bar take 2-3 minuets to load!

Im 1 more fault away from ripping it all out and putting my AMD board back in.
 
Your issues are not due to you choosing Intel. This is down to either a faulty board or user error. I've had no issues with my last four Intel systems (1x 680i, 2x X58 and 1x X79).

This an isolated issue to your system and you should fix it instead of giving up and going back to your old AMD system.
