I Just Can't Help Myself!

I have hardly had my dual 3ghz cpus running for a week and I put in a best offer on a pair of 5345s (Quad core 2.33ghz).

Thankfully that was turned down (I can't really afford it) but my trip back to ebay has baged me a mini pci-e 16GB SSD.

What the hell do I need that for!?! (It's to go in my T61 but still)

I have spent enough on folding the past 6 months. Enough is enough. Help!

Edit:

16gb only just covers my windows folder

Well I've bought it now, gonna have to make it work some how!

I just found out £180 could grb me a quad core i7 to replace the i5 dual core in my laptop.... Thats better value than the desktop chips (if you don't figure in overclocking).

It's just good that I don't have access to almost £200

The urge to beat me to 5 million is strong indeed. Still trying to decide what retardedly expensive piece of hardware I want to get for my birthday in April >

I hope i can get my second rig today al tho the weather stil looks MEH

5 million is where I was at when folding for futuremark, so it's always been on my radar.... Always good to have a competative edge though.

Going to make use of the old Q6600 and 8800GT that I passed onto my dad while I can. At best that will be 2 weeks worth.

Kinda seems unfair but you're due to hit 5 million a week before me with our paths crossing at closer to 6 million... So, um, no holds barred

This is how I got myself a GTX 460, a second GTX 560 Ti and my XW6400 dual xeon workstation.... and then the CPU upgrade for said dual xeon system.

I see us crossing at about 5.2 million based on where the stats are now. This is, of course, before I set up the Q6600 I just got, but also before I probably shut off my GTX275 because its PPD/watt is the weakest of the stuff I have running.

You are going to shut off a 9K PPD card...

Put a bid on 2 bids on ebay for single 5345s (Quad core C2D 2.33ghz to you and me).

Only gone upto £30 on each inc p&p so I don't think I will get them...

Will know in 3 days

Thanks for helping kick the habbit

The stats now say we will cross at about 4.8/4.9 million.

I'm guessing the GTX275 wont be shut off untill the 5 million mark now?

My previous 'folding day' was a little weak points wise, but hopefully I will be dropping couple of larger point units before this 'day' is finished.

I've been having some trouble with my setup, so I'm not shutting anything off while parts of my system go up and down. My 2500K crashed on me at 4.8 last night and lost most of a WU, and my internet went out today... so it really is going to be a close race! Also, an 8800GTX that I was going to get from a friend turned out to be dead before I could lay my hands on it.

The GTX275 will probably stay on, but it'll be set up in another computer with a Celeron 430 and another GPU just Folding, whereas now it actually is being used for my wife's WoW as well (so isn't getting the full benefit). If it's on 24/7 just Folding, the PPD/watt will be nicer.

We'll see how my PPD looks in about four or five days when I finish reconfiguring stuff.

EDIT: Switched the GTX275 for an HD 4870 in my wife's PC. The GTX275 is currently not doing anything, nor will it until I finish rebuilding pretty much every PC I own. So I'm down 8-9k PPD.

Thats a shame about the 2500k. Have you managed to get it stable now at 4.8ghz or have you had to back it off?

Was the 8800GTX a newer G92 core (I can't even remember if they did a G92 GTX)? because I know the older (was it G80?) core wasn't so great at folding. I was tempted to get a 8800GT or two from overclockers uk when they were selling them off for just over £30. At 5k PPD that wouldn't have been too bad.

I now kinda feel bad that I have been going t 110% now that your GTX275 is out of action

I have no idea what it was, but I managed to get the GTX275 running... had to take the 9800GT offline to do it though. Also in the process fixed a problem where in my hardware testing the 9800GT was trying to run the Fermi client for some reason, so I have one system Folding on two cores of the Q9300 and also running the GTX275 and GTX460. The GTX275, despite having only 2/3 of the shaders of the 460, is pulling higher PPD. The system as a whole is doing about 19.5K PPD. Got an E8400 in the bedroom doing 3k PPD, my 2500K is doing 14k PPD (back at 4200MHz, it was acting all sorts of weird at 4.8) and the i5-750 is doing 7k PPD Folding on three cores. The Q6600 isn't even plugged in, I have to finalize the buy from my friend, after which that'll be overclocked and Folding on all cores with the 9800GT. I don't know the stepping, but with the cooler that's on it it'll be lucky to run 3.2GHz.

Until then, I'm limping along at 43.5k PPD when everything is allowed to sit, though my wife and I use the two i5 PCs for games that drop the PPD into the 1.5k range while they're running.

What PPD is the 460 putting out (mine overclocked to 800mhz puts out about 10.5k)? I seem to think the 2xx series cards don't mix so well with the Fermi cards but I could be wrong there. Also unless you are running something else in the background you should be ok to run 3 cores on the Q9300 rather than just two.

With reguards to the 2500k, since you had it running semi stable at 4.8 I would have thought 4.6 stable should be attainable, but obviously thats still going to require testing.

Yeah, I have a ton of hardware to test right now, so fine tuning the 2500K is going to have to wait. The Q9300 is also functioning as my home server, including a Minecraft server and a Windows XP virtual machine that my wife VNCs into from work to visit Facebook and other sites. I've tried running it on three cores and can easily exceed one core load while logged into the Minecraft server and the XP VM running idle; I get more PPD on two cores for now, since the XP VM usually has some sort of load going on, it's also hosting an incredibly small and crappy website.

The GTX460 at 700/1400/1848 is doing 7900 PPD on a 7622 WU, while the GTX275 at 633/1404/1134 is doing 8500PPD. If it's true that Fermi and pre-Fermi cards don't get along, I'll switch the GTX460 into the Q6600 box if/when that build happens and run the 9800GT + GTX275 together. Right now I have to pick the two best producers, and these are they. I was running the 9800GT and the GTX460 together before, so if the GTX460 can stretch its legs as the sole card in a system that would be a nice way to go.

I'd say 7900 is a little low but not as bad as my 460 when it was along side my 560 Ti.

If you're not already you could try running -advmethods on the 460. Mine even on the reference copes pretty well with the extra heat output and thats with the volts upto 1.012 while running 800mhz.

The other thing you could maybe try. If the 275 can run GPU2, do that while the 460 runs GPU3. Hopefully someone can come in and confirm that though so you don't waste your time if I have got it wrong.

Lastly. You said the Q6600 is going to be running on a crappy cooler. If your situated in the UK I have an Arctic Cooling Xtreme rev 2 you can have for the cost of the postage.

It's not the best cooler in the world but of you can jimmy an extra fan onto it for a push-pull-push config (The on fan it has is in the centre) it will perform really well.

The cooler is brand new with all the bits, never been used and was going on ebay, but if you can make use of it, it's yours. It wouldn't say it's in perfect condition but being a budgetish cooler and not made to the same standard of say a Thermalright cooler thats not suprising, but there is nothing wrong with it to hinder performace. Just the odd little bend on the ouside of the fins where it has taken a bit of a knock.

Anyways, let me know if you want it.
