how much vram do i need?

your asking so I'm assuming you dont have a card yet so get a 2 or 3 gb card. Future proof your self a tad.

yh theres just so many to choose from its hard finding the right one for my needs..

so with future proofing in mind what do you actually mean with regards to vram? do you mean monitor upgrades or as games get better designed they'll use more vram to run them properly...?

i hope that makes sense...

thats actually quite an interesting read so thanks for that mate :)

im getting a 7850 (not sure which one yet) so i definitely go for a 2gb model?

defo 2GB, its not a massive price difference and gives you such a massive benefit.

You want to keep as far away from your vram total usage in games as this will avoid buffer issues making your frames skip.

Don't forget that putting AntiAliasing on bumps up your memory usage. BF3 on ultra with 2xmsaa etc uses around 1.5~1.8gb of vram

Oh right i did'nt know that thanks for the info :) so really for modern games at 1080p 2gb is a minimum requirement...

It does, if you have it. If you don't have it, you'll still be ok if you have bags of main ddr3, with little overhead to speak of.

vram is overrated. If you can afford it tho, for sure, get as much as you can. But if the price pushes you towards getting a faster card, get the faster card.

tbh im not that bothered about AA. obviously i wanna run games on high or max settings otherwise ide just buy a console lol.

so i think all in all 2gb would buy plenty for what i need.

thanks for your help everyone

1gb is too low for a 7850. they've released that card to hit a lower price point, get a 2gb version.

I have run bf3 at ultra with 2xmsaa at triple that resolution + a bit extra for bezel correction on 2gb vram

Don't bother with 1gb, its yesterday's thing, get 2+.
Example: Even at a res like 1080p skyrim with HD mods will use a little more than 1GB of vram.

As everyone said Id say go with 2gb, It will probaby come to good use in a year or so :).

But I have a questionmark here, I checked the link and it said BF3 used over 2gb vram very easily at over-1080p resolutions. Yet in this review with a 2gb vram card at 6040x1080 I see not VRAM-dips?

I get the feeling AMD uses more VRAM than Nvidia, which wouldnt be strange what with the 384-bit memory bus.

Might be thread, hijacking but I think the consencus of the thread is 2gb anywho :) Shoo me away if this needs a new thread.

its not an amd thing more vram usable = more stuff cached there
