How does this site get so many bots?

I don't relaly know the mechanics behind sites but how come OC3D gets the most spam bots out of any forum I've seen? There must be one everyday fgs

There are lots of people with far too much time on their hands. Some like to use this free time to browse forums, gaining information and doing their best to help others. Some prefer to try and make money by posting stupid advertisement links for cheap designer handbags on technology websites.

Just how the world works, unfortunately. We do try and deal with them as soon as we see them. We're hoping this will blow over, as the people responsible get bored of getting banned.

Is there a way to set up the forum so that new members first post must be approved by an admin? I don't know if this is possible but it sounds like a good way to prevent a lot of these unwanted spam posts.

We used to have a system like that - where users had to be manually accepted by a mod. Probably took a lot of effort by the mods to maintain though

Good idea, but as James has said it would prove to be quite a lot of work for the mods.

well with our community, we all pitch in and try to keep it clean. we do appreciate
the reports from the members and keep letting us know when "foul demons" slip
in and stir the pot with their antics.

They often post similar texts .. a php addon, who compares the string of a new post to already postet content could stop multiple posts of the same spammer - should make it easyer for admins.
