Homemade Anti-static Devices

Doesnt matter if its an insulated wire like i said, but still no, any static put into the wire will go to ground..... thats the whole point of a ground lol

Wire trailing in the carpet wont matter as (the whole point of the thing is) its grounded.

Using shielded wire (even just simple plastic coated) would be a better idea, but im assuming you already have the wire, otherwise its going to prob cost you more in wire than it would to buy a proper band and clip it to the case...

I`ve always said taking the power cord out of the psu is bad advice from manufs.

My rule has always been to turn the power off at the socket - or turn the psu off via it`s switch. Then press the reset button on ur pc a number of times. (if there`s an onboard led system, u`ll notice it`s power disapate)

From this point onwards, the pc remains earthed. And it`s very hard to do stuff in ur pc without touching metal stuff that`s earthed.

You can go over the top with precautions - but it`s better safe than sorry. Don`t get paranoid tho :p

hehe couldnt resist with all the foil mentioned in the thread :p

i've never insulated myself, and never broken anything due to static :p

but it sounds like a wise precaution

and in theory, it all sounds ...well....sound....lol

good luck :)

no offence ionicle, but ive known you a long time, and you dont exactly have the best luck with components do you?

Damn I missed this Thread! :)

I never ever ever ground.

I don't get why we are all going up in arms about it.. I lobbed a motherboard into the loft and then later that year decided I wanted it.. whacked it in turned it on off we go.

Hardware is very very durable theses days.. nothing to worry about at all. PROMISE! :)

Nice photoshopping llwyd! :D

ha, it all becomes clear now. I am finished with me static probs however, i have a proffesional looking crocodile clip hookup to an earth wire, and 2 copper wire wristbands. Also i will be working with LATEX GLOVES for CSI goodness for sure now. Gonna be sweet.

Hmm, i believe it is now more that i like being CSI ish than actually protecting my parts. YAY!

no, true :p

but recently, things havent broken asmuch....well, excluding a couple of things...

but i dont think any of that was static, it was my heavy handedness, and stupidity lol

oh, but why so, if you didn't ground ureself, then it is entirely possible that a low level zap killed ure parts. Not nessacarily, but possible.

well that was an interesting read even if it was a complete waste of time that could have been spent on google..

theres overkill, and then theres this...

however this has made me laugh somewhat...

Never had a component die on me due to staticing. Touch wood, no metal.

I'm sure my hamfisted overclocking is much more likely to kill things.. Make sure the guy your doing it knows what hes doing aswell, nothing worse than someone trying to bash your cpu in the wrong way round.

Actually I'm sure there is worse..

Meh handly components every day. Static? Never bothers me tbh Never had anything break by static...just stupidity a couple of times :p

This evening i just setup my first ever watercooling setup (leak testing atm) literally by touchin the radiator (in my house) as i walked by. No socks just in case and voila ;)

I've been messing with computer guts since I installed my first upgrade, a 220 MB hard drive into a 288 computer. The computer had ISA slots and I had to get an IDE card to make it work. Those were the days...

Anyway, I have NEVER done more than touching the case to ground myself, and have never lost a component during install.

U can buy anti-static safety shoes too :p (*cough* just had some ordered for me)

Erm, be a good video submission if the likes of Jim/Ham/Llwyd could use an old mobo and cheap memory etc, TRY and damage a componet with static. hehe
