I am working through everything for my home server and kinda stuck with what processor I should go with. For sure on board graphics so AMD is a solution I would not mind going with the only problem is I have not used them in along time. So not familiar with what they offer now days.

The reason I am unsure is the processor will be doing some work on converting videos to MPEG4 for streaming over plex and also I can copy it to my IPAD for the long flights I take for work.

What processors would you suggest?
I do want a processor that will not take forever to convert videos and be reasonable on power.
 
Intel are the CPU's you want when it comes to power efficiency, AMD CPU's have more power draw at load when comparing clock for clock against Intel.

How much 'work' do you mean the processor will be doing, converting ~35GB blurays rips to MP4 for streaming or 4.7GB DVD's, the reason i ask this, Transcoding Bluray audio and video is a heavy heavy task, and for this id recommend atleast i5 4670, its quad core and being Haswell, it'll be very good power wise, if its not blurays you'll get away with a decent clocked i3 haswell series
 
Well this server will be converting DVD and blurays. While handling streams of video and audio via plex.

The amount of converting I will be doing I don't think warrants a i7 with hyper threading. I will take a look at some haswell i5, as well as ivy bridge i5.

I do not think I would be missing much between the haswell and ivy bridge, what do y'all think?
 
To be honest, if you're converting blurays the hyperthreading will help you out quite a lot.

Best thing to do is on your current pc perform a conversation and transcode baring in mind these are 2 different tasks.

See how you get on you'll be able kind of set a benchmark and you'll know what to expect.
 
Ok I can do that tonight. My current rig has a 3770k in it and the biggest movie i converted was 24 gigs I believe and if I remember correctly it took 30 minutes or so. I could be wrong but that is what I remember.

I could just do all the converting on my main and transfer it. The only down side is I was wanted to automate as much as possible.

Tonight I will run those test and post up what I get.

Mrkambo when you say transcode and conversation can you elaborate on that a little more? Are you asking me to just run handbrake and transcode a file or what?

Is there specific software I need to use?
 
Plex transcodes when streaming, which means it will be converting the file being watched on the fly but doesn't produce a physical file of the stream.

Converting a Bluray/DVD, produces a physical file at the end of the process, which is what Handbrake is for
 
ok I got ya what you are asking now. I just converted an 1080p 5 gig film and it took 30 minutes using handbrake. I think I will be gunning for the 4770k or another 3770k for this build.
 
ya I know 30 minutes for the blu ray is not going to happen. the video was only 5 gig and it was at 1920*1080.

Instead of the 4770k I think the 4770S is more of what I am looking for. Lower power draw at idle, and lets face it this thing will not be working all the time.
 
4670S would be better TBH, when you said you'd be converting blurays i thought you'd be chucking 30GB of data at it
 
well i will do those as well just more of the 4 to 8 gig ones. I have some blu ray movies that I would like to rip for streaming.

I went looking around at prices for the 4670S and the only one I see for sale is the 4570S for 200 off of newegg.

Did they stop manufacturing the 4670S?
 
there is not a big difference between them.

Still recommending the i5 s series over the i7 s series? Even tho i will be converting some 10 gig or higher blu ray's?
 
you said you wanted a cpu with some power but wanted it not use much power in terms of draw from the wall, seeing as you wont be converting title after title, 24/7 makes its cost effective to get a i5, but if you dont feel its enough computing power then get the i7

I appreciate all the help with the processor. I like the price of the 4570s it is 109 dollars cheaper so I can go and get my a new HDD or something to stay under my budget.
