well im looking to make a home server just for basic file share/media storage but im unsure what to put in it

i have an old Asus p5w motherboard with 2gb of ddr2 ram and a core 2 duo e8400 cpu. would this be a good enough place to start and if so what else would i need i add to it or should i just build all from new?

If you have that hardware lying around, I'd use it. It will actually be overpowered for what you will be using it for though. You could get away with much slower spec. Does that board support RAID? Either use the on-board RAID if it has it or better yet pick up a PCI-e controller, some drivers, a PSU, and a case to throw it all in.

What OS you plan on using?

well i have an old LGA775 celeron cpu and MATX board but i dont know what speed it is and how much ram it has. yes i am pretty sure it dose support RAID although the board throws up error messages sometimes when you use 2 or more sata ports (comes up with a 4th primary disk error message). i have an old case all i need is a psu and hard drive/drives.

im not sure yet that was going to be my next question as ive never done any server stuff before so until i have a better understanding of how things work it will just be used for streaming to the media pc and storage
