Hey all, i've just has some good news getting into my university of choice so i wanted to celebrate by building a home server/all around happy rig

My thought process is to to eventually have a home server running either Ubuntu LTS / FreeBSD / Cent OS, But with the current prices of HDD i thought i will use the opporunity to build a hackintosh just for shits and giggles and then say next year some time invest in a few 2tb HDD and reformat.

Either way i wanted to run by the hardware with you guys for your opinion. Remember low power consumption is key with the main suppose eventually to be a home sever.

CPU: Intel i3 2105 (for the HD3000 integrated graphics) 100GBP

Mobo: Gigabyte H67M D2 B3 Micro ATX 83GBP

Ram: 4Gb Corsair XMS DDR3 1333 19GBP

PSU: 450W Bog standard from amazon 17GBP

Case: NZXT Source 210 Elite 40GBP

Recycled bits

SSD: (From current laptop) Corsair V100+ 96GB

HDD: (3 Random HDDs of all shapes and sizes)

Please could you pass on your thought considering my eventual plan to turn this into a home sever when i can find a few cheapo 2tb HDDS and in the mean time step up a gear from my dual core Pentium laptop haha! All in all i've only spent 260GBP or so, i thought this was great considering the expansion possibilities

Thanks

You could always go with the i3 2100 with HD 2000 graphics and save yourself another £10 as you will probably end up running the server headless anyway. There is no point in having an SSD in a server, serving up music and movies etc is really not that demanding. Put the SSD in your main rig that you use all the time and get the daily benefit from it.

The one area not to compromise on is the PSU, you can get all sorts of problems if you buy something cheap and nasty. Get a decent name like Corsair, Enermax, Seasonic or even Antec.

Have you looked at Windows Home Server 2011? - Its only £35 for an OS based on Windows Server 2008 R2 - a complete bargain.

In fact have you looked at the HP MicroServer with £100 cashback? http://www.dabs.com/products/hp-proliant-microserver-g7-n40l-nhp-eu-svr-7RMD.html?q=microserver&src=16
