Is there any way to overclock a CPU without going into BIOS?

My computer is store bought and I tried it the other day and there's no overclocking features in my BIOS so I just figured I couldn't. Please let me know if there is a different way.

Thanks.

You can always use software to do so, but since you found a way. Mind sharing what you found mate?

I figured out that I don't know how to use the software

hahaha.

pretty new to computer stuff. :p

here's my p.o.s.

Intel Core 2CPU 6420 @ 2.13GHz

Nvidia 7350LE

mobo is Intel i945G/GZ

I have about 200$ I could spend so I was thinking of getting a 500W power supply since I have a 350W atm and can't figure out how to over clock, and then getting a nice new processor and maybe a graphics card a little later.

What do you suggest?

id suggest just buying a new motherboard so you can overclock properly, no point wasting money on other components if you are using software overclocking, you wont get anywhere.

Some info for you if you don't know:

Mobo:

Supports

  • Intel Core2 Duo
  • Intel Pentium D
  • Intel Pentium 4
  • 1066/800/533mhz
  • PCI Express x16

You might as well opt for a nice 775 board, get a quad and run over your budget by a few $10's. Then wait for a better graphics card, worth the wait mate, trust me.

That would be me

I'd go for a budget graphics card. The 7300 is in no way limited by that cpu and for example an nVidia 9600 or ATi HD4670 should do just fine

Edit: would need the old connection of which I forgot the name version then, right?

Ok. I can't overclock in BIOS, if I got a new motherboard would it change my BIOS settings?

Link me to your suggested motherboard?

Thanks guys. Much appreciated. :)

I would still need a new power supply to run the quad core huh?

How much would this cost?

Yes mate, the BIOS is an Basic input operating system. You can change your motherboard to change the BIOS yes, but you can always see if there is an update available from Intel website. Go take a look there, might find something, this can add more options to your BIOS, like overclocking options.

You can always purchase a new motherboard, what processor you looking to use? The one you have now or go for higher?

You can always pick one up for around £60 and a decent one, or you can get 700watt for around £35

I really just want to improve frame rates in games.

So I suppose higher, unless I could find a way to overclock but I'm a little handicapped when it comes to overclocking :P

Would getting a new power supply and new graphics card be totally worthless because of my CPU?

Well... You're with the no and yes category at the moment lol, updating your graphics and PSU will give you FPS boost obv, but the PSU will not boost FPS, but the graphics card might need more power than your current. Myself would go for a new CPU and mobo, this way you can OC, or even new mobo for $40 and a new graphics & PSU. But it's all money :(.

Whatever is best FPS improvement is what I want. I just want a 50+ boost in frames and I'd be happier than a kid with candy.

If the graphics card/PSU is the way to go I can pick up a new 550W PSU and 9800GT at the store right now with no issues cause I know how to install that stuff.

If you suggest getting a new mobo and PSU so I can overclock for better FPS, I'd have to buy a new CPU fan as well, and I would have to take it into a shop because I don't know how to install a new mobo. Total noob :D

Go for the 9800 and PSU mate, then update your mobo later on. You will gain a nice increase of FPS don't know about 50 but you will be playing around 125FPS considering you have Anti Aliasing turned off.

To replace the mobo unscrew the screws on the mobo and pull out, then put new mobo in and screw back in :D.

You think you're so cool because I never looked it up.
