[HELP] Network Issues (NAS/WIRELESS ETC)

Hello Folks,

i need some help with my Network, at first some informations.

I'm from Germany, Nordrhein-Westfahlen and i'm a customer of Unitymedia Deutschland.

I'm using the Coax-Network of Unitymedia and im receiving :
Download 200 Mbit/s - Upload 10 Mbit/s

The Hardware is provided by Unitymedia (UM) with the Modem/Router/TV all-in-one Receiver from Samsung.

I also bought the ASUS AC56-U and the Repeater ASUS RP-AC52 AC750 but i'm not using them anymore because they didn't work out better as the Basic Receiver and caused more Networking issues.

I'm also running a NAS System from Synology, the D215j.

Also i tried using Powerline from Devolo but i lose about 70% Performance so that is no choice for me anymore.

So far so good about the Hardware.

Right now it is organized like this.

The Samsung Receiver from UM has 4 Gbit Ports. 1 is used with a 30m-Lan Cable to my Desktop in the first floor. 1 is Used with a 50m-Lan to the second Floor and one is used with the NAS, the last one is used by the Powerline Adapter to get WLAN into the Basement.

The Problem i always had is, i can't reach the NAS comfortable from WLAN via Networkadress through Windows.

If i want to connect more than one or two Desktop devices via CABLE i need to use a Switch which always cause Networking issues and i can't Access the NAS.

My Goal is :

I want to connect my NAS via LAN/WLAN from anywhere in the House from Basement to 2nd floor. (Range Extender for WLAN obviously needed, without any NAS Connection issues.)

Please recommend Solutions and Hardware to solve my Problems.

Have you tried a decent switch?

Ive never had any issues with Netgear switches.

I used one from TP-Link.

My Main Problem is that i don't want to have a Router with 20 Ports and run 5-6 30m to 50m cables through the house.

My first Structure was like this:

Samsung Receiver (WLAN Option turned off) into ->


ASUS Router into -> Cable for first Floor; Cable for Second Floor, Powerline Adapter for Basement; NAS

Cable for first Floor into -> Switch for all Devices First floor;

Also on first Floor the ASUS Repeater;

Cable for Second Floor into -> Switch for Devices Second Floor;

I can't acces the NAS after the second Switch from the first & second Floor.

I can't acces the NAS through the Repeater from the first Floor.

I can't acces the NAS through the Powerline Adapter.

I only could Access the NAS through direct Connection with the ASUS Router

I want to stay flexible with how many devices i can install on every floor but still want to Access the NAS through every Connection, most important through stable WLAN through the whole House.

Networking is a pain for all the little things.

1st thing to make sure of is that all the IP address ranges are matching across all devices. This is achieved by one of two methods.

1/ make sure that ONLY 1 router/switch/repeater is running as a DHCP server. If DHCP IP assignment is enabled on more than one device, this will kill IP address assignment.

2/ alternatively, set each device a static IP address (My personal choice).

The first three parts of an IPV4 address are the all important to ensure devices can see each other i.e. 192.168.1.x etc.

If i choose Option 2, can i run as much Switches as i want?

Any recommendations to solve the Problem with the WLAN range?

I'm tempted to buy the new AC3200 Nighthawk from Netgear and maybe additional a repeater to solve the range and Quality Problems for my WLAN.

If you can get it working with cables then a few switches will work and yes you can run multiple switches on the same network.

So i will stick myself into that matter. Thanks a lot !

And a solution for my WLAN Problem ?

Best case i want only one Network (2,4GHZ and 5GHZ) if i run a repeater i can choose between 2 2,4GHZ and 2 5GHZ thats not what i want to see. And than through the one 2,4GHZ and 5 GHZ acces to the NAS. Is that even possible?

Sorry for all the stupid questions, Networking is a rough Topic for me.
