Help Me Build a New Rig?

Hey fellow Redliners. I really, really want to fold again. So I'm once again considering a new rig so I can do it. Been nursing the old rig since 2006 and it's pretty tired. Only thing I know I want is that new AMD chip (or do I? If you think I'm wrong, let me know.) All I have right now is a tower. Keep in mind I'm not very good at computers, so a friend has agreed to help assemble all parts once I get 'em. Thinking of running Linux on it, but may have to "hold my nose" and run latest Windows. However, I'm on a strict budget. I'm retired and the spousal unit is retiring in couple months on disability and pension: so, fixed income. Anyone got ideas? You don't have to post suggestions here if you'd rather e-mail me. Thankful for your expert suggestions.

If you are going with a lower budget, I would suggest a Phenom II, a GTX460 or 560, like 4GB of DDR3, whatever size HDD you think is necessary, a decent psu from like ocz or corsair. What's the top end of your budget? What I just listed would probably run you about ~$650-$700.

Hey Trinity! It's really good to see you around here again. I've missed you.

As for the rig, what kind of budget are we looking at? I reckon we could spec together a pretty nice system that's low on cost/running cost and high on PPD.

Hey Kup, and Food Stampz and SnW and Kilobravo. I know I've been away. Won't say I'll be back here a lot, but I'll try. All your suggestions are great: the price range from Food Stampz is about right for my budget. Not really concerned with oc; main idea is stability, reliability and a respectable amount of work units. No ambition to out work any of you, just to make my contribution, pay my respects to Hallowed Point and Redline, and the spousal unit has Parkinson's so I feel the work is worthwhile on many levels.

Got a shopping list?

He has got a case, guys. Maybe a Spinpoint F3 Sammy 1tb instead of the 500 gig WD? Would also think it's better to invest in GPU rather than CPU right now, tbh. Maybe, if you want, you could wait until Buldozer is out which inevitably would force the older generation components' prices down and potentialy be amazing. It's all a lot of choices, just hope we can help you make the right ones for you. Sorry to hear about your "spousal unit" 's condition, matey.

A little informational post here.......

The OP is a lady and I do mean a lady and holds a very prominent place in Redline history.

I'm sure she appreciates all of the suggestions for her planned upgrade

You don't know what your comments did for my old heart, SteveHat. Thanks a billion. Well, friends, this is what I bought. CPU AMD PH II X6 1090T 3.26 AM3 RT, PSU Corsair CMPSU-650TX 650W RT, MB Gigabyte GA-770T-USB3 AM3RT, MEM 2Gx2/G.SKILL F3-10666CL7D-4GBXH, HD500G/WD SATA2 32M WD 5000AADS . Bought a KB and mouse; already had an Antec case and disc burner. Running Linux. Not sure how well I'm hooked up to F&H, but up to 91% on my first fold job. Hope it completes and gets posted to the team stats.

Everyone here has been great and I'm hoping to again do my bit for Redline.

Trinity, I just got your message on msn but I can reply on here easier until I'm home.

What username did you use? Did you register for a passkey under this username?

If anyone can dig out the passkey info I'd appreciate it, I'm at work atm and it's a bit of a job getting to it. :/

I'll be home in 2 hours though.

Cool, cheers Steve.

Trinity, the stats are running an update right now but once they have finished we'll be able to whether you WU has counted toward the Team and if not we can get it back on track.

Ok, looks like Stanford got your WU ok as it shows one active CPU for you. I'll keep an eye on it for you.

Thanks for your kind words, Todd.
