Recently returned to pc building. My last build was with an Athlon 3200 with a 6800 ultra. My new build has been fun and really interesting with some bumps on the way.

Bump 1; I7 6700K temps! Stock value and auto settings on mobo's. How many newbies like me get caught in the "Are these temps ok debacle", I did. Once I got to grips with my UEFI and manually set several parameters, I was all set.

Bump 2; AIO water coolers and their higher expectations. I was initially really underwhelmed and almost pulled the plug on replacing it with a Noctua air cooler instead, especially when I was averaging around 80+ degrees on Aida64 stress test, 90+ with XTU & Prime95 (26.6) at room temps of around 21*C.
I bought the Corsair H115i which after sorting out Bump 1, I now find it quite amazing for how well it really performs.

Bump 3; Is 1.4 voltage core safe? I can get 4.8ghz @ 1.4v with temps (now) around 60*C stress testing. So I was thinking to myself; do I leave it there and no harm done? Or is it shaving life off slightly, halfing its life or will I be lucky to get a year's use? So after a bit of thought I settled for 4.6ghz @ 1.27v with 50*C stress temps. An extra 200mhz seems pointless to me when only benchmarking will really divide the two.

Bump 4; Video cards; I eventually bought the 980ti FTW at £400. I could afford a 1080 but thought as I will never prance around with VR and mainly play titles like CS:GO why would I spend an extra (at the time) £250?

anywhoo...

Hi to you all

Cheers
Lee:)

WOW!! That is a HUGE jump in hardware performance between your builds ( The Athlon 3200/6800 to the I7 6700/980Ti) and massive advancements/changes in tech/features as well.

Just out of curiosity did you just use pre-builts PC's during the time between or where you just away from PC's all together. Either way the specs your rocking on your new one makes a powerhouse PC to be proud of!!

Thank you
After the 3200 for which Halflife2 was my staple game/diet. I started playing on the ps & then onto the Xbox's. In between I just bought laptops. I didn't really miss it so much until the company I work for was about to chuck out a perfectly useable HP Elite desktop. It contained an i5 660 with 8gb ram. Bloody waste I thought, so I took it home, played about and it, and it all went downhill from there...lol
