HELIOS (Caselabs SMH10 | black/copper | EVGA SR-2 | Geforce Titan) - by alpenwasser

subbed.
mate if you can be arsed you should totally make a build log on youtube. i can watch those all day. and of course more of your precious tricks to make a build look amazing, you sir, are an artist.

Thanks, much appreciated!

Now that I have finally gotten over the hurdle of making my first video I might actually
do that for HELIOS. I just needed ZEUS up and running because my laptop is not
really practical for doing video processing . Then I needed to figure out how to
best do the video, set up some proper lighting and so on and so forth. It took me
about four days to finally get this the way I wanted it, but now that I have most
things figured out I will probably be a bit more efficient for future vids. ;)

I have actually been thinking about making a review on the Caselabs case. Not really
a normal review though (there's plenty of those around already), but a closer look
at what I think makes the case special compared to other stuff that's out there
and my thoughts on its finer details (and the price ;)).

oh well, the perfectionist's curse. always attention on the smallest of details, if it's not perfect, it's not good enough :P
Definitely go ahead and give the Caselabs review a try, i feel like you could be the type of person Tom is looking for :)

Well if I can't do something right I don't do it at all. Or at least for the things I really care
about. For less important stuff I usually just say "f*ck it, good enough is good enough"

Don't know if Tom would have much use for me, starting next fall I most likely will not
have the time to do any serious computer business anymore. If the next run at college
will be like the last one it will be "out the door at 6am, back home at 11pm" pretty
much every day (the bane of an engineering degree  ). Yes, I know I could
go around doing less work and partying instead, but see first statement in this post
for why that won't be the case.

But thanks for the kind words and encouragement, I always appreciate that. :)
And until fall there's still some time to do stuff...

ah no, i am no party person myself, it's a good thing that you rather invest your time in education than in worthless brain cell massacres.
I don't know how much time the engineering degree will take, but you are definitely one of the most knowledgeable users around here and your lingual skills are more than sufficient to write a proper review once in a while. It's not a full time job and as you said: it's still a good while till fall. Of course it is all up to you, but i would highly recommend you to give it a shot.

Haha, yeah I don't think the linguistic barrier would be the problem, thanks! :)

I just wouldn't want to make a commitment I possibly can't keep, but hey, let's see how
things go. :)

Quick update: As promised, the tutorial on how I'm lacing the cables:

Cable Lacing Tutorial

Very nice tutorial alpenwasser , Great job.
You didn't state how much line you started with , but I guess 1 meter or 3 feet should be enough. Also when your done , tie your knot and trim the line, couldn't you tuck the knot down between the wires so it's not as visible ?
But great job doing the tutorial and the video.

Thank you. Yes, about two to three feet will do, it depends a bit on how many wires
you want to lace together of course.

I have actually tried hiding the knot inside the wires. It's a bit tricky with the cotton cord
though. It just displaces the wires and makes it look untidy on the other (clean) side. If I
ever find a very compact knot that's also secure enough I might redo that. It can be
easily done with Nylon though since that's a lot thinner. I might add a few annotations
to the vid tomorrow or so for that, thanks for the feedback! :)

"I rarely see something new now a days with sleeving and methods, but this guy thinks out of the box. I love the finished look and the patience he took with it. You need to give it a look.

Props to him for doing it his own way!

This is what he says, in case you can't see it without an account. Congrats by the way! :p

I can actually see it, luckily his profile is public, but thank you nonetheless. :)

Very flattering, getting a shout-out from Lutro0.

Hey man congrats on being featured on the live stream for linustechtips. Like all your projects it is a thing of beauty. I finally got a new bottle in the mail so i have been tackling that with my new thoughts so hopefully i will have some updates to my build but glad yours is getting the recognition is deserves.

A well deserved Shout out aswell alpenwasser!

EDIT - 1000th Post! :)

Hehe, thank you! And congrats!

Thanks! Yeah it's nice to see one's efforts appreciated. Together with being featured
on Lutro0's FB page I'd say that yesterday was a pretty good day for me.

And thanks for the YT sub! I plan on doing some more tutorials actually. And I'm
definitely looking forward to that bottle (and the rest of your build), it's a really
awesome idea IMO. :)

I really liked the lacing so I guessed I would give it a try. I know that the sleeving is not that good (my first ever sleeved extension hehe) and the lacing could be a bit tighter but I am really pleased with it. So with the help of alpen wasser's video tutorial I managed to lace the first one and then did the 2nd and 3rd from memory and once you get the hang of it, I must say it's fairly straightforward.

Props to Alpen Wasser :)

Yay, awesome!

With cord as thick as yours I could see this working very well for an industrial sort
of build, that looks seriously heavy duty. And I love the look of that red cord on
the black cable.

On a side note: ZEUS being featured on Linus' live stream has given me some
very heavy traffic and shot me over the bandwidth limit for June. The pics should
be working again by tomorrow. I have purchased additional bandwidth to have some
more reserves for the future, especially since I'll be using more png's from now on
because they have better colour fidelity than jpeg's, but they are also substantially
larger in file size and therefore cause more bandwidth usage.

True it's a bit thick but I had a few pieces lying around as I wanted to give it a try before purchasing more for my main rig. I will buy some off ebay 1mm thick and I will make sure to post some pics on another thread when I do it.

Haha, that's precisely how my sleeving technique for this build came into existence.

I was sitting in my workshop and contemplating the problem that I couldn't sleeve
my wires in the usual manner (too thick to fit both wire and sleeving into the connector),
and I just thought to myself "What do I have laying around here that I could use for
this?". Luckily I had bought a few rolls of Nylon thread on eBay for no specific reason
and a bit later I had it figured out. :D

And thread thickness isn't really relevant for learning anyway, unless you're using
Nylon, which will just drive you insane (well, it does work, but it's probably not the
most reasonable way to get started).

I have actually been lacing HELIOS for a few hours today. Made some pretty decent
progress.
