HELIOS (Caselabs SMH10 | black/copper | EVGA SR-2 | Geforce Titan) - by alpenwasser

This is absolutly crazzy extreme
=> first : one of the awesomest rigs in existence :notworthy:
=> then : you have almost every tool you could want and an awesome workplace. What's next:) ?

Very nice workplace!
Eagerly awaiting more pics :)

Yeah we're pretty happy with it. Both my dad and I are sort of fetishists when
it comes to hand tools and craft work etc. Not that I'm extremely talented,
but I enjoy working with nice tools and doing the best work I possibly can,
which is all anyone can do anyway if we're honest ;).

Also, he sells accordions (the website I made for him was actually for that,
but it's not yet done by far, I'll do the finishing touches once HELIOS is complete)
and from time to time he does small repairs on them, which is why he wanted to
have the workshop up in the apartment and not down in the basement.

Hehe, thank you for the kind words. I am indeed very fortunate when it comes
to anything besides my health

I'm not sure what's next to be honest. I might start another build log next week
for our home server/HTPC/BOINC rig, which will be an R4 modded to fit an
Alphacool UT60 360 mm radiator internally, but I have to wait for a few more
parts.

Regarding HELIOS, I'm waiting for some 6/32 UNC standoffs, and after I've
received them I'll be able to mount the PSU (the PSU is a very fun story btw).
Then I'll probably put the rig together provisionally and test if the hardware
works properly.

I don't really have a strict work plan, I sort of build what I can when I receive
the necessary parts and then wait until I get more. Also, there are a lot
of small details that need to be worked out, and I'll just think on them when
I feel inspired.

I'm also still waiting on my original Molex pin remover which I'll need to do the
sleeving for the PSU (which will be paracord).

Besides that I'm considering doing sort of a review of the SMH10 with a few
details that are usually not clearly shown in reviews. I've been asked a few
times by now if they're really worth their steep price or why exactly they
are so expensive, and I'd like to show why exactly I think they are indeed
a good investment. But first I need to work out a good concept for that.

Thanks for the support, guys! :)

Looking so sick so far

Hehe, thanks :)

Mine as well go for a R4 XL, more modding can be done with it i would guess for barely any more money.

True. The reason we went for an R4 is that it has to fit into the sideboard
in our living room. I will do a build log on it and show the sideboard so it will
be more clear why the XL would have been a bit unpractical.

This look's like it's going to be a really nice build.

Will be keeping an eye on this!

Thanks for the support :)

Well my build looks infantile in comparison, This Project log is a twofer your getting a project log and a in depth review of every piece involved. Good stuff man cant wait to see it completed hopefully my build gains as much momentum as yours.

Oh ok, looking forward to it!:)

As am I ;)

Well that's a bit harsh. I really like your build! And the remote control thingy
you're working on is pretty awesome imho.

Haha, yeah I strive for thoroughness.

Thanks for the support. Looking forward to your progress as well :)

I purchased all the pieces im waiting on the 400mm radiator to mount in the front once i have the placement of that nailed down then comes my super top secret reservoir, If that goes according to plan it will be full steam ahead. Most of the modding to my case has been a bit archaic using a hacksaw is not as precise as one would imagine. I need to step into the 21st century. I have been calling around to some machine shops to see if i can get one to make some pieces for my build so hopefully that goes well.

Welcome to the club!

It really is quite a marvelous piece of kit.

Your build was actually part of why I did not sell mine. When I was sick I stumbled
upon your log and followed it. I just could not get myself to sell it after seeing all
that pron :dribble:

Thanks a lot!

I'm simultaneously very excited and a bit terrified about OC'ing on the SR-2 (I'm
not very experienced at it, due to my rather long break from PC building I just
never had the opportunity to really play with it). But since I'm a technically curious
person by nature the excitement overweighs ;)

If I really don't get it to work I might get back to you with some questions if
that's ok.

Im glad you liked my build man,I do love it but prepare for a power bill increase...you know this already tho. ^_^

Xeons are quite forgiving, the SR on the other hand can be a funny old girl, she definitely has mood swings!

Yeah since I'm still living with my dad and will be for the foreseeable future (college
student) I have bought a power meter to measure the power consumption and
will then pay him back the part of the bill caused by my rig.

It's not exactly cheap but it is within my possibilities. After all, it's a hobby, and
there are many hobbies which are quite a bit more expensive than this.

I have read about that. I was really quite lucky to get the X5680's for such a good
price (well, compared to other Xeons, that is ;)), so I won't be tempted to overclock
them too hard.

For one thing I really don't want to kill anything (probably won't be able to replace
it), and secondly according to some testing done by BOINC, overclocked CPUs
can have a tendency to turn in incorrect results, which is not really the point imho.

I'll probably aim for something ~ 4 GHz and see how the temps are. Then take it
from there. Maybe see where I can get it for benching and then turning it down
again. This rig will have to last me for a long time, so I don't want to do anything
too extreme with the clocks.

When i read that things like paintball and Air-soft come to mind for the amount of money spent there's really diminishing returns on enjoyment. Most things you buy are consumables i.e. the paintball and air-soft pellets themselves so your constantly losing money and essentially firing it out of the barrel of your chosen hobby, Whereas with a computer building hobby we are at least doing something constructive that forces us to think in a technical manner.Hell , I know people who spend more money on drinking and smoking then i spend per month on computer components and we are at least buying something that will last and provide enjoyment for a considerable more amount of time. Keep up the great work.

I myself am playing the waiting game with the postal service.

Exactly. I used to have a car (well, I still have it, but at the moment it's not in use and is
stored in our garage), to be precise a Volvo V70R from 1999 (it looks pretty much like
this, but with different wheels and a different grill) and between June 2006 and
December 2012 I spent several thousand CHF (as in, it has 4 zeroes before the
decimal point) on gas alone.

That's without insurance, repairs and so on. Of course I needed the car for going to work
for part of that time, but still, a lot of that driving around was just for fun and didn't really
do anything besides pollute the environment (it's not a very fuel-efficient car, but very
fun to drive ;)).

So I think spending some money on the electricity bill for doing research (physics, medical,
cryptographic etc.) can be justified. At least to me, personally.

As a side note: No, the car was not a gift from my dad, I bought it with the money I made
during my army time :ar: and financed its upkeep with the money I earned from work.
