HDTV Card

Hi,

i know these are available in the US, but can any of them be used in the UK (or any available in the uk?)?

i know that there is no hd broadcast here yet, but having one thats got the capability will make it future proof, also if it has a hdmi connection that would be great for xbox 360 etc...??

Anyway iv looked around for hd cards but i think they're mainly American based atm, i'm guessing that it'll be done more or less the same when the U.K. gets hdtv so i dont see why an American card wouldn't work over here

Well yeh but since a card for uk would be completly different i thought its a different case, since youd need to to able to run on pal-I, do you know if those american cards would?

Hmm iv been browsing on ebay.co.uk and found two items which seem to be freeview tuners that support HDTV.

Now my question do these support REAL HDTV, or is this bullcrud advertising meaning you are running the standard broadcast at a high computer resolution?

Also on a side note, the american cards which do support hdtv properly, why wouldnt they support PAL?

I had an ooollddd PCI tv card many years ago on my old computer and i think I chould choose any tuning standadrd in the world to scan. So would these american HDTV cards be the same?

I don't think it will be HDTV unless the input signal is encoded to run at that resolution

Some do support PAL, I know with my TV card Compro videomate which has both digital and analogue tuners, it allows you to set PAL or NTSC in the setup configuration. Btw these cards rock, I highly recommend them:worship:

pv150, when you have the option of setting pal, is that for the digital tuner, or the analogue tuner only?

I have also a Compro Videomate, great card, a bit tricky to get it working under Linux.

Well now i am thinking about getting one for my laptop, (probably will wait for one with hdmi in UK for desktop).

AverMedia have a reasonable reputation. These cards can be had for around £65 inc vat bit more expensive due to their cuteness. Don't expect good digital or indeed any reception without a good antenna

Well the only thing i need to know about this card is whether by using xvid codec I can record to MPEG-4 format from the digital tuner, I know its possible via the analogue tuner.

Also catch22, about the antenna, I live quite close to Crystal Palace (where there is a transmission tower), I am probably a mile or 2 away id guess (I can just about see it out my window lol), so would using the small magmount antenna be viable do you think?

If you can't get reception there then no one should be able to on a "portable" aeriel. Should be ok in the park with the lappie - no high buildings and not to say reflections between. In any case theres out thou can do about it!
