HDD`s Comparison

Hi,

Anyone have any idea how the samsung sata2 spinpoints are? How do they compare to the WD Raptors? Would 2 Raptors better running in raid 0 or would 2 spinpoints be better?

Cheers

Im Just interested so any knowledge would be great :)

I've got both although I'm selling the raptors as I have no use for them now. I'd say the raptors are faster, whether this is better depends on what you want.

Anyone seen any benchies? Hopefully storagereview will have a review of them soon, they have the new testbed up and running and i trust their reviews more than anyone elses.

Then again 2*raptor 74GB is more expensive than 2*250GB spinpoints and you get almost 4x the storage space.

In fact, performance between the two is probably now converging - in fact, the raptors are really old drives. Also, 7200rpm is only 28% slower than 10,000rpm, yet platter densities are 75% higher on the spinpoint (34*2 in raptor, 2*133 i think in spinpoint). Plus the spinpoints are quieter and cooler.

If you are being sensible the spinpoints win - even though 2*raptors might just edge it out in simple file operations. If you really want ultimate speed, serious people won't be going with raptors, they will have scsi at 15k rpm.

Hdd`s

Hi thanks for the replys,

Im looking to buy new Hdd`s and would like performance more than storage. I play alot of games so ideally they would have to be good for gaming. 15,000 rpm? Which are these? Thanks again

This is similar to my thread a couple of weeks ago!

I asked about the SpinPoints, but ended up with a 300GB Seagate Barracuda (was on offer) instead.

I think TomsH have a few tests of them up against each other, and the differences seemed fairly marginal. I knew that the Seagates were quiet and reliable so went with the offer.

SataII and NCQ are a pretty good match for a 10K spindle speed. Its more graceful as well than just having the raw muscle of a raptor

Since when were most of us around here sensible :p

I really want to see a new Raptor soon, they are already supposed to have TCQ IIRC but it isn't well implemented, so better TCQ, SATA II, increased capacity.

Wow!

Hi Guys,

Have been away for a few days and just got back. I did a bit of research on the scsi drives after i wrote the post and wow they are expensive!!! But i guess they are worth every penny.. I was looking at 2 Hitachi 15K147 36.7GB Ultra320 80 Pin SCSI 16MB Cache in raid 0. Even the scsi cables are costly. I have 2 WD Raptors at the mo and was really wondering wether id benifit by going to 2 spinpoints? I know the scsi would perform better but they are expensive....

Cheers

how much space do you need mate? If the 2 74GB raptors provide enough then I don't see the point in changing to the spinpoints - that was the main reason for me ridding my raptors, now I have 2TB of HD space which is also very quiet (another main reason as I was building a quiet rig).

If you have the money two scsi drives would be very nice - could also add a third drive for storage. Whats the biggest capacity scsi drive out atm?

SCSI is an expensive route to follow. Their main advantage is when they are used in servers isn't it? I can't imagine the hassle and cost of them is really going to offer a large enough advantage; although I spose that's up to the user...

OK - true lol - but when i meant sensible - i meant not stupid - raptors seem stupid to me when the real % winners in a bench are scsis or a massive PCIe RAID50 array on an areca device :)

Yeah, that's the one i was looking for, TCQ - I heard about it sooooooo long ago. what a blast.

i currently have a single raptor for OS/Games and its fast enough for me :) Im always the first to load game levels on the local server....and iv got a seagate barracuda 200gb for storage (tho im soon gonna get another storage drive too) - i got it back when they were new and the platter size made it faster than the 160 and 250gb variants....

Id consider a spinpoint but they dont have a 5year warranty...il only buy enterprise level drives for storage these days - had too many dead maxtors :(

Thanks

Hi Thanks for all the feedback! Yeah the scsi drives are an expensive route to follow and storage aint my issue! So i will stick to my 2 Raptors for now and hope that WD will present some newer versions in the near future!!!!! :)

Thanks again for all your help i also learnt a few things too!

Cheers
