HD 600s, should I get them?

Hey guys,

I'm looking at a pair of hd 600s for games, movies and music. Pretty much in that order too. I already have a soundcard with the power to drive up to 600 Ohms.

I was just wondering if you thought it was worth it. (I can either get them barely used with a years warranty left for 230, or brand new with 2 years warranty for 270).

Obviously If anybody wants to recommend other phones that's cool, just please add an argument to your opinion :D

Thanks!

I'd look at Beyerdynamic DT770s / DT880s / DT990s depending on whether you want open or closed.

Some of the higher end Sennheisers are a little overpriced for what you get. I mean, if you're spending nearly £300 on headphones, I'd personally want something with better quality cables than:

Beyerdynamic's have just as good quality drivers, and are amazing headphones - but also they're made almost entirely out of metal, which makes them incredibly strong and long lasting, but at the same time they remain lightweight and very comfortable.

Ultimately, it will come down to personal preference and how much you are willing to spend.

Personally, many Beyerdyamic units are not my cup of tea (especially the DT770, which are not my bag, and which I sold-on). Still, they do appear to be popular on online forums, so other people must like them.

On the flip-side, I only have good things to say about the Senns. (I've had a set of HD595s for donkey's years, which I have enjoyed very much.) Now, that's my personal preference, from actually wearing the units and comparing how they felt and sounded -- your own tastes may be different.

Some things to think about are:

* closed vs open -- I personally like open. Sound leakage is not a problem for me, and my ears feel cooler. If you can't bear the thought of others in your household hearing some sounds coming from your headphones, then closed might be what you want.
* weight -- I like light cans.
* comfort -- I personally was relieved to take-off the Beyer DT770s. I found them irritating after a while (heat; clampage). The headband was a little more finicky than the Senns to adjust. I've had no problems at with my Senns on any front.
* sound stage -- after a certain level of spend, they all sound pretty good in my opinion.

Given the above, my bias is towards Senn, who I feel make great quality, light, open cans. My next set will most probably be a pair of HD598s, HD600s, or perhaps a set of HD650s.

As I say however, the choice is ultimately yours.

I wouldn't spend that much on headphones if you aren't going to use them for critical listening like mixing, mastering etc. You can get great headphones for a much lower price, you should take a look at the Sennheiser HD-25's, Beyerdynamic DT-770's, AudioTechnica ATH-M50's Shure SRH840's or Sony MDR-7506's.

I own the DT770's and DT1350's by Beyerdynamic myself. The DT1350's sound great, they seem reveal every flaw, have a great soundstage and have a very flat frequency response. The only downside is that they press down on your ears pretty hard wich can get uncomfortable after a while. The DT770's are good too, but compared to the DT1350's they have a less good soundstage and less flat frequency response. I found the DT770's to be more comfortable than the DT1350's though, because they go over your ears and have soft ear pads.

At the end it would be best to go to a local store where they sell these kind of headphones, take a listen to some music you are fammiliar with and see wich ones you like most.

Hmm, I'm surprised you feel that way about DT770s...

They're the most comfortable headphones I've ever used by far - and tbh, you're the only one I've ever heard who's said anything about them not being comfortable, or hurting after a long time.
On the other hand, I've heard far more people complain about the comfort of some of the Sennheiser models.

I do completely agree with your view that it's up to personal opinion.

As for the open vs closed - the DT880s/990s offer very good alternatives if you do prefer a more open design.
