Having an issue

Let me start off by saying, I've successfully built three other computers. The builds all used different parts, but they've all been similar builds. Nothing that I would consider "over the top", just very simple components for standard gaming rigs.

Each time, I've had relatively easy builds with no issues.

Install motherboard in case, install psu, processor, cooler, hdd, ssd, dvd drive, and video card. Then the wiring for case functions (power switch, reset switch, hdd led etc.) Making sure all of the fans that need to be connected are connected. Pretty standard stuff right? Typically when I do it, everything fires up on the first try no issues. But I tried building a friends computer yesterday, and went through what I thought was a very simple cut and dry build but it won't turn on. There is power getting to the motherboard, the stock cooler is plugged in and the 24 pin atx power is connected in addition to the 8 pin up by the I/O panel. I rechecked the way I had the power switch and reset switch wired and cross referenced the diagram that came with the mobo. every thing was plugged up correctly but it just wouldn't boot. I can't help but think I've missed something insanely simple so I come here asking if there is anything this community can offer as advice. Bear in mind that I am a fledgling enthusiast. To rule out the possibility of compatibility issue I'll include a list of parts I am using.

CASE - NZXT|PHANTOM
MOTHERBOARD - ASUS|P8Z77-V LE PLUS Z77
VIDEO CARD - MSI|R7870 TWIN FROZR 2GD5/OC
POWER SUPPLY - TT|TR2 RX 750W W0382RU RT
PROCESSOR - INTEL|CORE I5 3570K 3.4G
SSD - 128GB|OCZ
RAM - G.SKILL 1600 ARES
HDD - Seagate Barracuda ST1000DM003 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5"
DVD - Samsung DVD Drive

OC3D Help me!

Maybe try disconnecting the cables for the front I/O and all the drives from the motherboard and see if it will post? If you still get nothing, remove the video card. If you still get nothing, check your psu to see if it's providing juice. Lastly, if your psu is fine, that pretty much narrows it down to the motherboard or cpu.

wont turn on and wont boot are VERY different things.

You need to explain exactly what happens when you hit the power button. remove anything thats connected thats not 100% essential to the first power up.

also need to know if the motherboard lights up when you turn the PSU on.

Cant really do much with the info youve posted sadly.

The motherboard lights up when everything is connected, the green light on the bottom right corner lights up. When I press the power button, nothing happens, fans don't spin, nothing beeps. It is as if I had done nothing at all.

You checked the PSU works? It is a ThermalTake PSU after all...

You could try disconnecting all the PSU cables, bridging the green wire and a black wire in the 24pin mobo connector with a paper clip, maybe plug a fan in too (some units require something to actually power to be able to turn on) and switch the unit on to see if it functions

I was going to address the jumper when I go over there again. And unfortunately I don't have any spare parts to test with :/

Okay, looking at it like that makes it seem MUCH less daunting, if I go through the rest of my bag of tricks and possible fixes, I'll give that a whirl.

The fact nothing happens at all rules out CPU. Its either user error or mobo.

You can short the power button pins to make sure its not that too. disconnect the power led and the hdd led too to rule that out.

You can NOT fit the power and reset switch the wrong way round, its the power and hdd led the wrong way round that can stop a system starting :)

Thanks for all the suggestions gents, I'll make sure to check back in after I get my hands on it again tonight.

Sorry for the confusion guys! It was that stupid CMOS jumper. Got it working, posted, booting, it's all good. Thumbs up for the help!
