Hey guys, as of right now i have a q6600 out of an HP using an ASUS IPIBL-LB motherboard made for HP running at stock 2.4ghz (as i am not able to OC on a retail pc board) that has 4gb ddr2 667 and a nvidia GTX 460... i made this pc out of parts i got from some friends so that i'd have something to game on while i put together my i7 rig. currently its "ok" putting out around 35-50 fps on most games i play- however I'm picky and would really like to get into the 60+ range.

I bought an i7-940 the beginning of this year from a friend for really cheap but now I'm wondering is it worth it to make the swap to a new mobo, 6 or 12gb 1600 ram triple channel mem, and get a cpu cooler (which would be around $400) for the x58 plat form. With the new platform i could eventually get a 2nd GTX 460 for SLI which by benchmark is similar in performance to the GTX 580 (which would be the same cost of upgrade to x58).

My dilemma is that idk if its worth it to keep my 940 or to sell it and upgrade to 1155 instead and get a new 2600k plat form running 8gb 1600 ram dual channel (which i would assume would be an extra 100 or 200 by the time i sell my current i7-940). It was more motherboard to chose from which all have a few more features than the x58 and have a nicer bios. Again I eventually get another GTX 460 later when i have even more cash on hand.

Any ideas and views on this would be much appreciated.

Personally I think the 1366 sockets has run its course. There's alot of new stuff coming out. x79 - socket 2011, bulldozer, 7000 series gpu. Someone metioned recently that there will be a 2700K.

thats my point idk if i should just sell my i7-940 and upgrade to the newest chipset when i feel like it or keep my i7-940 and just go with that plat form for the next few years

thanks for posting btw

A majority of new builds I've seen recently on here either use the 2500k or if doing some video editing run the 2600K for their gaming rigs. But there are those that want the best of the best and are holding out for Sandy Bridge-E (socket 2011).

It all depends on how deep your pockets are and what is the best fit for you. A 2500K and a 570 will run just about any game - but for some that's not enough.

I'd sell everything and go with a i5 2500k setup. It'll be more future proof and wont be too much more wonga. Obviously you'll need to keep your 460

A 2500K is plenty for gaming you don't need a 2600k

thanks sheroo, i think ill probably sell what i have and upgrade to x79 later those boards are sexy

Hi,

If I HAD to buy now, then I'd look at a 2500k, Z68, 2x4gb @ 1600mhz and a GTX 570 as a HUGE improvement over a Q6600. This is basically what I did a little while back! I'd keep the Q6600 system as a nice little Gateway/server box (which is what I did lol) sell the i7-940 (you could try here, though there's a minimum post-count requirement on the For Sale & Wanted sub-forum) to recoup some costs.

If I could WAIT I'd certainly been keen to see what the retail Bulldozer performs like and what the system build costs are. I'd also check out SB-E to see how much they up the performance from SB, for the price of course, as well as overall system build costs for the newer Quad Chan memory motherboards etc. Also, I'd be keen to check out the new 7000 and 600 GPUs from AMD and nVidia respectively. Only then would I start putting a system together.

There does appear to be a particularly large amount of new stuff due very very soon, so it might be worth the wait.

Cheers,

Scoob.

really i don't HAVE TO buy NOW.. i just thought sense i got my i7-940 i would consider upgrading now... but then as i looked into cost it just makes more sense to sell and re-buy when actually NEED to or find something i really want. I'm thinking the p67 or x79 plat forms are great and the bios are beautiful from what i've seen and can speculate will continue over.

As for Bulldozer; i actually prefer AMD because it is much easier to continuously upgrade different parts- due to the motherboards support different cpu chipsets... However I'm going to wait to compare it to the x79 because idk if Bulldozer will support SLI and instead of me getting a GTX 580 I could get a 2nd gtx 460 for MUCH cheaper and do SLI to get the same and sometimes better performance and yet again waiting for a while before something really blows the doors off those.

If you get a 2nd gtx 460 your system should be able to max most games for a while. The 940 is still good and will be for a while. Think if you really need an upgrade like that. Personally I would wait a year or two then upgrade the cpu.

thats my plan crimson... however i can't run a 2nd GTX 460 with the current motherboard i have and i can't find a good LGA775 board that i like for a decent price so i'd have to upgrade BEFORE going SLI... thats what my big dilemma was
