H50 heat issue ?

Just recently i had to RMA my motherboard so i had to clean my H50 pump/block and the CPU as the thermal pad was quite beyond reuse.

Well my issue is the temps i have now since i installed my new mobo and rehoused the block, I used a small amount of the MX-3 thermal compound supplied with my H50, and on first runs was 6oc hotter than my prior idle temps on the default H50 thermal pad. I though i had set the block wrong and or not applied the paste properly. So i waited untill today when i received my new Noctua NF-P12 fans to run a push pull setup on my rad.

I took the opportunity of opening my case to reseat and repaste the CPU block. well on doing so i have gained irregular results and am a little perplexed. i have still got higher idle temps than the old setup (H50 default thermal pad and a corsair fan as intake from the rear). Furthermore i had a very big difference on my cores.

As u can see Core0 runs a lot hotter than the others at high load and this confuses me too.

My questions are.

1. I think i have installed the paste wrongly, what is the best paste and the way to install it on a i7/H50 setup.

2. The Noctua NF-P12's came with three voltage adapters, do i need to use one as i have them wired straight to the 3pins on the standard power cable that comes with them and i do not use the adapters. Will this effect the RPM of the fans ??

3. Is the [Case] (<--NF-P12--) [RAD] (<--NF-P12) setup the best to run my fans on.

4. Finally is there an "ultimate/must have" thermal compound or are they mostly the same ?

Regards Sean.

Its a mixture of the fans and the paste. The H50 need high flow fans, ie: massive rpm and huge CFM. thats not Noctuas matey sadly. Noctuas on the H50 are now a good idea. Hence you seeing a temp increase.

If they have the blue/black adapters on take them off as they slow down the fans, but tbh I wouldnt have mixxed those two in the first place :(

Feck !!!

50quid down the drain Grrrrrrrr. :( :(

Tom (or anyone else ^^) what would u recommend for H50 fans and also what Paste would u say ?

Was there a reason you bought the H50 dude?

Pretty much yep :p

Lol, **Cries** More money wasted.

Right i need some pro advice then Tommy my lad :)

One i need to use the Noctuas as i cant return them to scan and dont want to spend on them... also ill sell the H50 and reinvest in a cooler. Ideas on a cooler ?

Also what Thermal compound would u use ?

Right hold tight for a little bit fella, put up with it for a couple of weeks as Im waiting for something to come in, and it might effect my views. So just hold fire for the minute ;)

ok m8.. i know these temps aint gunna melt even a chesse sandwich so i can do that. But untill i hear you later advice would u recommend a Block reappication, new thermal paste ?

You're using MX-3 yeah? Well, that's pretty much (one of) the best thermal paste(s) out there.

Oooh you've got my attention now! Care to spoil just a tiny bit? :D

I got rid of my H50 awhile back, as my temps were seriously high too.... I now have a Noctua NH-D14 and does the job well....

Make sure the block is making full contact and you have it twisted in properly. You said you just changed boards? TBH dude my H50 doesn't even let me reach those temps even with the fans disconnected.

Check the back plate mounting. Due to the design it's very easy for it to slip out of the holes and then pop in way after you installed it. This then slackens the pressure holding the block in the twist assembly (you'll know what I mean because you own one).

Also, it is highly possible you have air in the system or an airlock. I notice when I remove and reinstall mine (carefully of course) that when I first set it running I can hear it spitting slightly. If you have been rough with it it's possible you might have put some bubbles in it.

Also, more dumb things.. You do have the pump connected to the power source on the motherboard?

In your bios the motherboard will have a setting for the use of the power connector. Of course you should be plugging it into the 4 pin but on my Crosshair 2 at least you need to go in and set the power socket to 4 pin. Otherwise it runs 3 pin.

The H50 performs better on AMD than any cooler I have used or read reviews on. With a single fan it is close to silent with very good cooling. When I ran it out of the box with the single fan it was pretty much inaudible and slaughtered my Noctua by a good 10c.

Thx for the tips and things to look out for.... im just surprised that Tom says the NF-P12's are bad for my RAD as the noctua site says they are good for tight rads... oh well. I know tom knows best in these matters.

Aye, just hold tight dude, I may have something for you in the next few days. Im just waiting on a review product you may be interested in.....

i would of thought the p12's were good for rads aswell what with them having a high pressure

Me to, i am still shocked as i cant take the sting of bad investment to well lol.. but im waiting on toms review product and will probs have to sell my P12's and H50 and reinvest into a new cooling solution.

Also im begining to think all the net review and mag s i read a full of bull. I cant understand some of the temps these ppl are getting in standard every day settings. I read today that Custom PC got the Thermaltake Frio to Idle a i7 at 13 Degrees Celsius. -.- Mine wont even idle in the 30's *sigh*

mags like custom pc do lie fella, they get money to make products lookawsome

its not a bad investment, they are shizz hot fans so ither keep them or replace your case fans with them or sell them

Just switched the fans around to pull air in from outside the case. im still running a push/pull setup, but i got temps of 36-40 across my cores. This is a big difference to my temps yesterday at idle. but i think i may keep these untill i see Tom's proposal :):). Still a bit confused how people get to sub 20oc on air :S. Also its about 4 Degrees cooler in my PC room today.

A small question to who can answer this first, My P12's are plugged into random 3pin 12v outlets on my board... will they still run at max 1300rpm ?
