Google Fiber

They could do 1Gbp/s to most houses now but it would mean feeding each house with, fibre and swapping out all the kit but still people would only get 100Mbp/s when, trying to get files from outside of the UK.

Most websites run on a 100Mbp/s connection though so anything faster is almost wasted.

The issue still though with all these high speed connections is the links out of the country, because if they are not able to give that speed then its useless having such a high speed.

Then even if they were to get the links to other countries up to spec in being able to support those speeds, you then run in to the issue of having storage in a pc that is capable of keeping up with the information coming through.

I wouldn't say no to the higher speeds but I just think at the moment they are wasted.
Good point.

What about torrents? I know the speed of torrents depends on the seeders of course but I have on small occasions, maxed out my connection on them. Do these get limits too or could you go super fast here?

And I suspect on other services such as Usenet where the news servers definitely boast gigabit connections, that could work... and for everything else there's 100Mbp/s. It's a minor convenience and gimmick until the infrastructure supports it but... there's still a reason to get it :)

Not sure about Torrents as I don't use them because mainly they are infested with Viruses.

Torrents I do understand are limited to the upload speeds that are on the seeders broadband and any restrictions they place.

Still pc's and the links out to other countries are still going to hold these speeds back.

Not infested if you know where to look.

If I am connected to 150 seeds that upload at 5Mbps.... with about 5 "parallel uploaders" from west Europe that uploads at about 50Mbps.... you could be reaching it. I think. Not sure.

I could download the entire Big Bang Theory collection in 1080p complete with extras (166GB ) in 22 minutes. Not bad going!

I didn't want you to link it. I'll grab it later when home. I just downloaded BBt and how I met your mother full series took about an hour each I think but it want Hd

Does anyone else see Kansas City as a very odd place to test this out?

I think Kansas might have been chosen because of it's proximity to the "center" of the contiguous U.S. It might easier to "sprawl" out from there. But that is just a casual observation.

A few things played in to the choosing of Kansas...

1. Proximity to a main Google location
2. The semi central location or "sprawl" as he called it.
3. Kansas city is a fairly competitive internet market. To show off their power.
4. Easier to implement (soil and ground type) {not like where I live XD}

A few other smaller things came into play but it was basically decided in the first round of eliminations.

Haha when you guys are getting fiber i'll be getting hopefully 2Mb/s by 2014...gotta love the middle of nowhere! :)

dunno how this got so much publicity and the UK has had gigabit for a good while now and hardly anyone even knows lmao probz cos it's google i suppose

Never have I seen a gigabit connection advertised. Perhaps some mega expensive corporate line, but nothing for the public. What Google's planning is fantastic - offering a gigabit connection to everyone, for a good price. They're the only ones that have the network infrastructure installed to achieve such a thing. That's why they're getting the publicity. That's why I'm so impressed.

Can't say that i'm in the know on US geography, but I see no reason why Kansas City would be a bad choice?
Perhaps they just have an outstanding network infrastructure which Google can take advantage of.

Well, this is intresting. I love google services, I think they do a very good job. And now internet?

Funny how they even give you a free Internet service, that is nuts o.O
Its only up to 5Mb dw and 1Mb up but after you pay the 300$ or 25$ a month 12 times, you have it for free, which for a lot of people is more then enought.

Im in Portugal and I love my internet connection (100Mbs dw, 20Mbs Up, I need to get the speedtest pic XD) and I doubt google could do much better then PT (Portugal Telecom) already does.

I trully, trully beleive that they want this for personal use as Josh said. Looking on how big google is becoming, this would reduce the costs on their infrastructure dramacticaly in the future.

Even so, 70$ a month for Gigabit? hell yeah XD
No just kiding XD I wouldnt get it, my 100Mbs is already overkill for the average todays servers speed. Only some torrents and Steam really takes advantage of it.
