Going beyond "maximum settings"

I've read many reviews of graphics cards, both pro reviews and comments from users, that say such-and-such a card is sufficient to play on "maximum settings" at 1080p.

Is there anyone else who finds this a bit vague? Max settings for stuff like texture filtering and anti-aliasing are very varied and I often find them to be insufficient - there is still visible aliasing - so I use the Nvidia control panel to force 16 or 32x AA.

Just a thought :)

Reviewers say maximum setting and are referring to the in game settings. Its just easier to keep a consistent setting and have all the cards tested for the specific setting. Its not vague unless you don't know what the actual settings in the game are. Sometimes they say max settings w/ 4x MSAA and then you know that's the only non max setting. Again its easier to say max everything than this is at x and this is y with this being z.

A lot of people *Not very knowledgeable about PC type folk* consider "Maximum" as 1080P with no AA but all maxed settings, I know PC Gamer Magazine did that for a while and then called anything after that "Ultra".
 
Considering that every modern card can DISPLAY "max settings", we have to asume that maximum = everything on "max".
Of course AF/AA are "wild card", as there may not even be a setting for them in the game (driver can force them tho) or settings are described as Low/Medium/Off (or just On/Off ?).
That's why showing settings in video review is REALLY helpful :)

Other than that, we can have visual MOD's (W_D, Skyrim, etc.) and other stuff (like Downsampling), that can push modern GPUs so much more.
 
I just wonder if there are people out there who have put money into really capable hardware and never see the real extent of what it can do. All the focus seems to be on overclocking (don't get me wrong, overclocking is great, who doesn't want free extra performance?) - but I am not sure if there is an awareness that a lot of the time, "max settings" are really nowhere near "max" at all. You can make games look so much better with just a bit of experimenting with the graphics card's control panel

Not forgetting to mention Nvidia inspector, Lots of nice settings in there that can really make a game shine :)
 
TTL actually explains all this in depth in his 750Ti review, with the hows and whys of game benching and keeping all "maxed" settings and resolutions the same every time.

I think he's on about more than the reviews go on about i.e tweaks to get the most out of games which is done through mods, Tweaks etc...

Aye indeed, I played Crysis 2 the other day and afterwards installed the latest MaldoHD/Blackfire mod, Holy hell, There's a reason I love PC and it's the mods :)

Have not tried that mod yet.. will add that to my to do list. :cool: Currently going through my library blasting games on the 750Ti, see how they stack against my old 6790, so far it's blowing me away. Maxwell is awesome!

Here is Crysis 2 with some mods, For some odd reason the full maldo mod with the updates is hard to get hold of so I'm uploading it to my mediafire account and I'll PM you the link when it's done if you want it.

Anyway here's modded Crysis 2, These screens don't do it justice !

PC gaming will never die, sky is the limit when comes to tweaking and modding. Especially for Skyrim and GTA with ENB's. I remember my first PC back in '95 and tried Darkseed 2 demo, I pretty much jizzed myself when I heard voices in game from my trusty Sound Blaster 16.

I'd play it with the mod to be honest as it enhances the graphics very nicely, some of the texture are insane !
