GFX upgrade advice.

Hello Ive signed up to hopefully gain advice on how best to upgrade my current computer. The specs currently are as follows.

HD6770 Sapphire 1gig DDR5,
Intel core 2 duo CPU E7200 @ 2.53GHz,
4 gigs of DDR2 ram,
Intel DG31PR MoBo,
Blue Storm II PSU 400watts,
Antec 900.

As you can see the system is pretty old by todays standards and considering I have a limited budget to work with Im hoping to weave some magic with some help from this forum.

Is what I have assembled thus far, I would be looking for feedback on the list in its current form and also seeking advice concerning a GFX upgrade and a PSU upgrade should I need one. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

suppose I could go upto between 75-100 for the mobo if need be. =D by all means suggest a new list if you have the time =D

Well the list I would suggest would be about £150 more expensive, With AMD it does not pay in the long run to go cheap.

Ok the only 2 things I changed were the CPU and motherboard, Went for the 8350 over the 8320, I've played around with both and yes the 8350 is just a clock bump essentially from the 8320 but it does make overclocking a lot easier out of the box.

The motherboard is the Asus Crosshair V Formula-Z, I've worked with this motherboard a lot and in my opinion it's the best and most stable AMD motherboard out there and a good investment.

The RAM and Cooler I left the same as those you can upgrade later on but the previous 2 I highly recommend.

I would look into the MSI 990FXA-GD65 or Gigabyte 990FXA UD3

they are around £80-100, i have had experience with both and i can say they work great.

It is really worth it going to the 990FX chipset instead of the 970 chipset.

+1

If your getting an FX CPU and especially if you want to get the most out of it.
I've worked with most AMD socket types and getting anything lower than the 990FX chipset is not worth it.

I added the MSI 990FXA-GD65 to my pcpickerlist.

What gfx card would you fellows suggest? And would I need a new PSU to go with it?
Oh and to add I think its worth mentioning I already have a 1080p monitor and I will be looking to enjoy BF4 and some of the new games coming out at a high setting.

If you want to get the most out of the CPU I'd highly suggest going for the Asus motherboard I picked out for you.

I can't point out enough that you do not want to skimp out when it comes to AMD hardware.

If money is an issue just wait an extra month to save up more cash.

If you want to get an new GFX card then a new PSU is a must as 400w will not cut it at all, If you could give us your maximum total then it would help us better to help you :)

I Apologize I missed the post with your link. =D

I was planning on buying afew pieces every few weeks, I'm in no hurry to get it all in one go however having the complete list would help me prioritize what to buy first.

Seeing as ive a AMD CPU I assume its best to get a AMD card? One of the HD 7xxx series? Anyone in particular would see me through the years to come?

-edit 2
The most I could spend on it right now would be around £600-£700. Factoring in the GFX cost and PSU. I can go abit above that total though if it has my new computer lasting longer. So Im guessing around 150 for the gfx card and however much needed for the PSU. Just assemble the list you would pick and Ill settle for that =D Thank you.

Gentle bump. Still require advice concerning the GFX card & the PSU needed to tie the whole system together neatly. Thank you.

I'll make up something for you later today, once I have finished today's studying.

Ugh, exam times are really not fun at all :(.

That motherboard would have done the job but as you can stretch more I'd go along the lines of this:
http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/2DRbA
CPU: AMD FX-8350 4.0GHz 8-Core Processor (£137.00 @ Ebuyer)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Seidon 120V 86.2 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler (£37.14 @ Aria PC)
Motherboard: Asus M5A99X EVO R2.0 ATX AM3+ Motherboard (£95.98 @ Amazon UK)
Memory: Kingston Blu 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory (£61.76 @ Amazon UK)
Total: £331.88
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)

@Barnsley
Thanks for that alternate list, any ideas on a gfx and psu upgrade?
if you like your current case this would be what I'd get. If you'd want a different case (might be a good idea as your antec is a bit old) you can get a decent-ish sub £50 case :
http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/2DT2S

CPU: AMD FX-8350 4.0GHz 8-Core Processor (£137.00 @ Ebuyer)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Seidon 120V 86.2 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler (£37.14 @ Aria PC)
Motherboard: Asus M5A99X EVO R2.0 ATX AM3+ Motherboard (£95.98 @ Amazon UK)
Memory: Kingston Blu 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory (£61.76 @ Amazon UK)
Video Card: PowerColor Radeon R9 280X 3GB Video Card (£229.99 @ Ebuyer)
Power Supply: SeaSonic M12II 750W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply (£81.84 @ Scan.co.uk)
Total: £643.71

I would choose a Seasonic G series PSU over the M12II series. Better quality and higher efficiency.

Asus DCU2/MSI Gaming/Gigabyte Windforce/Sapphire Tri-X are the top cards for a 280x. My brother had the Asus DCU2 280x and it is dead silent with iirc the only one near as quiet is the Tri-X cooler.

It will be better to save all of your money first and then order all the parts you need rather than waiting weeks with parts just sitting around. If something is DOA and you ordered that first you might not get a new one.

I was about to make my own list but i must say Barnsley has more or less already put down exactly what i would.

I'd perhaps whange vendor for the 280X though, the other manufacturers seem to have quieter coolers ATM.
