If you do however choose to go the 480 route, do understand what you are getting into with it's cooling and power requirements.

The 480 is an absolute beast when you can tame it, which i have created a perfect video showing how to use the 480's cooler to full effectiveness.

550watts 80 plus rated power supply is the minimum requirement in my eyes, also make sure you do not OC the GPU on a PSU with only 550watts.

650watts+ is for overclockers with this GPU, it increases power use massively under OC conditions.

If you want any kind of info related to the 480, fire away, i will be able to answer all questions about it with 110% accuracy.

If you want some real world performance, here is my YT channel.

The 480 is about on par with a 7870, so a 7870 Tahiti LE should beat it by a small amount, the Tahiti LE is only like £25 more and runs far quieter and far cooler, so that would be a better choice

Granted, but 30 quid could be an extra game, or extra food on some peoples tables..

It depends on what the consumer wants.

My mistake, the 480 is only on par withe the 7870 in a few games, in most the 7870 is 5-10% better, so the Tahiti LE should be a good 20% better, that extra £25 would be well worth it

I am not so sure of the truth to that, the 480 was tested on old drivers, and with driver updates, the 480 became faster and faster, although people will follow review sites.

I am talking about benchmarks done recently, the fact of the matter is that even if the 480 was cool and quiet the 7870 Tahiti LE would still be a better choice

Of course, for 30 beans more :)

I am talking price/performance, this happens all the time with rivaling fans, i am unbiased... i know how good the 7870, 7950 is, and Tom's number do not make a lot of sense in his benchmarks for the 7950 and 7870 LE...

But yeah, 7870 is cooler, and apparently quieter? not sure to that either, coil whine+high pitched sounds are not quiet, and very annoying.

Depends on what model you buy though, the 480 stayed to it's original design, apart from a select few.

Remember, both the last 2 video's are retail versions.

Not at all, i believe you have never owned a GTX 480 however...

I am not being nasty to you, but it is mostly either fanboys or people who follow reviewed cards who rant like this.

The fact of the matter is, the 480 in retail form is not nearly as bad as the review samples.

Well, i'm considering buying myself one for a dedicated folding rig in the future, so I hope what you say is true :)

If you have a keen eye, you will notice that my 480's are different sample versions, although they are both from the exact same manufacturer and same spec.

One is light green, the other is orange, look at the side of the PCB.

There are still V1 480's out there i am sure, but if the ones on SCAN are the upgraded versions, then you are in for a treat.

I shall dig around for more info regarding that however.

Look dude, I am looking at benchmarks for the 7870 and the 480, the 7870 beats the 480 but about 10% on average and runs cooler and quieter and costs only a tiny bit more, therefore it is a better card, the only use I can see for a 480 is folding

It gives the consumer a different card to think about, 10% is nothing in real world gaming, especially with AMD's really high frame latency, forget about that one?

I am basing my opinion of raw performance and real prices.

7870 is a great card, i admit it myself, but the price of the 480+matured almost perfect drivers is worth it to some people, and heat and noise is well overblown about these cards.

Power consumption is high with GCN too, but of course, we shall not mention the throttling that goes on when stressed to their limits, including the Nvidia 500/600 series.

Power consumption will not make that much of a difference for a casual gamer, i am surprised that you Tom are saying anything like this in all honesty.

I understand your voice on the noise and heat output, but power consumption?

A person should be buying a 5470 if it is that bad.
