Gateway and dynamic dns server help please

Our Internet connection is through a netgear dg824 router which then has 2 more netgear routers connected to it. These 2 routers are what we connect through. I have noticed that the main gateway is setup as a dynamic dns server, is that really needed and why can I not even ping the gateway?

hi chudley

i think you may have two switches connected to your dg824, which is acting as your gateway. and your computers would then be connected through those two switches, as you wrote. if you're in need of your router being set up for DynDNS i cannot tell you. perhaps you're running a server service of some kind in your internal network being forwarded by your DynDNS registered router. an example could be a webserver or a gaming server of some kind. if we're talking about your workplace it might be used for some kind of remote support by a third party (just a guess).

basically it might be possible to chain two or more broadband routers, but you would probably need to set them up for RIP (routing information protocol) communication or apply static routes. i think that would be rather difficult (but not impossible) on consumer grade modem/router like the dg824.

assuming that all your client IP configuration is corrcetly implemented, "ping" (ICMP echo request) may be dropped or denied by your (internal!) gateway. what does ping say? "destination host unreachable" or do the requests time out? after confirming that all the settings on client and router are alright, i personally would use a protocol analyzer (like wireshark) to see what packets are going over wire and try to make sense out of it.

further you might want to check if any locally (on your pc) active IP packet filter (such as windows firewall, an internet security suite....) blocks ICMP echo requests(outgoing) or replies (incoming).

i'm pretty sure i've already gone to far with my post. so please forgive me :-)

Thanks BaMb1N0,

I am on the work PC so can explaina bit more.

We connect through a DG824 adsl router to the internet. That connection works fine if you plug a pc directly into it, you get instant access to the internet.

Attached to this router via a Cat5 cable are 2 WPN824 routers. These both go off in different directions to extend the range of the original internet connection. The broadcast wirelessly so that multiple users can connect wirelessly or directly into the back via cable.

After someone reset the original router back to factory defaults we have not been able to connect more than one PC to the router and the 2 satellte broadcasters no longer appear.

I have disabled dynamic DNS as I do not think it is needed but we still have the problem where the first PC connected to the router is the only one it sees.

On odd occasions I have managed to get it working through both routers to my pc(if i get on before any one else)but surely we should be alllowed multiple connections at the same time.

Cheers again and if anyone else has any ideas I am all ears.

DNS must be disabled, and manual IP addresses set up for the LAN switchers. only the last link to your provider must have a DNS.

BOX1 (router) : connected to provider via DNS.

BOX2 (switcher) : connected to the IP address of BOX1, but have its' own unique IP address. all connected devices have BOX2's IP address.

BOX3 (switcher): connected to the IP address of BOX2, but have its' own unique IP address. all connected devices have BOX3's IP address.

etc....

Cheers for the help guys, I took abit of time this evening to try and get it sorted, which I have

.

So first thing I did was reboot the "gateway" the other 2 routers were displaying as attached devices but nt their names. I spent quite a bit of time going through the gateway router settings and making sure nothing was wrong. After connecting my mates laptop to it and turning the DHCP settings on and off we noticed that it allowed his laptop to connect wirelessly for the first time = progress.

The next step was to go to the 2 outer routers. we struggled for a while checking the settings and found that I could connect to the internet through cable but the wireless would not work. Deep breath and a quick press of the reset to factory default and allowed teh setup wizard to detect the internet connection, then configured the wireless access point and it all started working.

Done the same with the other side and we now have a fully working setup, thank goodness!

It is only now that I realise how much I rely on having access to the internet, whether it be for my hobby or out of neccesity. The same goes for mobile phones- 10 years ago I would not have thought nothing about not having one, let alone having it with me, now its one of the things i check for before I go anywhere.

Anyway, thanks for all the help guys I am happy I got it sorted fairly quickly after my initial post otherwise I may have been pestering you for ages.
