Hi everybody, because i have pc3200 memory which limits any overclock to my prescott 540 (3.2ghz) i tried setting the fsb to ram ratio at 5:4. At this setting the ram is 333mhz instead of 400mhz stock. Anything over 3.52 ghz (or 220fsb * 16) fails to load windows xp and i have exhaustively tried every v-core all the way up to the max and have relaxed memory timings from 2-3-3-6 to spd values of 3-4-4-8. At 3.52ghz with ram at 5:4 the memory is only clocked at 186.5mhz or 373mhz effective (well under the rated 400mhz speed). Before I waste money on faster rated ram, I would like to know if I just have a shitty processor for overclocking? I thought all pressys where damn good overclockers. My mobo is definately made for overclocking so its not the limit, and the psu is not fluctuating so i doubt its the power supply. Any ideas are appreciated, thanks guys.

Hrmmm, you should definately be able to get higher speeds at 1:1 with max voltage... I'm no Intel expert but I'd say that it looks like your cpu could be holding you back.
I'm going with ram or cpu seems as if your mobo/psu seem to be ok as stated. What ram are you running? With those super slack timings and higher voltages it seems you should be able to achieve a much higher fsb.

memory is corsair xms 3200 dual channel. rated for 400mhz so i dont expect a high overclock with 1:1 so thats why i set it to 5:4 (cpu:ram). even with this ratio and the ram staying under its rated speed the processor doesnt overclock well, and i just wondered if it could be the ram or more likely the cpu.

It is the C2 ram not the cheap shit lol, and i have raised both the vdimm to max and vcore to max. all the vcore does is make my cpu heat up without increasing overclocking stability. just wondering if underclocking the ram produces unreliability? seems like it shouldnt but im not an xpert.

The motherboard is an Asus P5gdc-deluxe (an overclockers board) and as far as the ICS go, im unsure, i dont want to remove the heatspreaders. the ram is version 4.1 manufactured in the 38th week of 2004 if that helps?

Ok NOW IM PISSED! I just bought ram that retails for $404 canadian, the corsair xms4000 pro with the fancy little leds on the top of the heatsinks, this ram is rated at 500mhz at timings of 3-4-4-8. I cannot overclock anymore than I was able to with my old ram. I tried 225mhz (450mhz effective) which would give a cpu speed of 3.6ghz from stock 3.2ghz and system crashed. What do I need to do to succesfully overclock my machine guys!? The psu rails are stable they do not fluctuate much at all and stay within the atx standard limits. Any ideas appreciated, im using the 1009 bios for my asus p5gdc-deluxe motherboard. thanks guys.

Aman: it sounds to me like you don't know why you can't OC your machine farther than you already have. Read this, this will help you determine what is limiting your OC.
There are pro's and con's to buying PC4000 memory:
Cons: you spent more money.
Pros: you can run your machine 1:1.
Post all BIOS settings. What kind of cooling do you have?
What makes you think your computer is unstable at such low FSB's?
