Fractal Modding Competition

Not sure if I can do much as of now, but once I finish this year and hopefully enroll in Medicine I will get my friends to spray paint ,each one, a piece of the case. Then I am gonna finally build a Master Race PC. Black and white totally gonna be the theme. Maybe a graffiti style back panel. Inside white camo and black-white. Perfect with fractal. Good luck friends, wishing each one best of luck :)

"Id honestly treat this like a job interview or if you were going to ask a vendor for hardware sponsorship. We will be looking for genuine enthusiasm and excitement not just someone looking for a free handout."

just a quick reminder.

If this was my case then I would be looking to build my first ever custom loop for my cpu and 295x2. My plan has always been to run separate loops for my cpu and gpus even though it would make very little difference in temps I think twin reservoirs would look great in here mounted at the front. I like the thought of purple liquid for one loop, and white for the other. I would pick white bladed fans so that they could be easily painted to match the fluid. Maybe also mask and paint my SSD raid setup to match. RGB leds would be a must and attempt to set them to match or contrast nicely against the fluid. I have not dissassembled my 295 yet but I am wondering whether I would be able to set some purple leds in there to replace the red on the logo so that would match the rest. If that is not possible then I would just disconnect the ones that are there or cover them otherwise the red would look odd against the purple. My current Zalman case is due for a change as it only fits my 295 because I have sawn some of the metal away to enable it to fit lol. Unfortunately I lack the graphical skills to be able to put pretty pictures up so you will have to use your imagination lol. Best of luck to all entrants and I will be exceptionally jealous when you all win and I am left here in tears with the same old kit. :( lol
aww heck count me out, funds are not available :( Good luck entrants

Builds need to be documented and finished by the end of November dude.

I'd mod the case's front panel laser cutting it to allow more airflow, then slap a coloured acrylic panel (colour will depend on the colour scheme, duuh) also cut as the front panel and get some white led

Also I'd mod the window and change it to a semi tinted tempered glass and make a psu shroud to hide the cable mess down there :P

And of course, water cooling the the rig

We have a weekly games night at 8pm every Monday, each week I get home at 5pm sharp. This is because my current PC has been named Trevor (after the GTA character) as we have a running whatsapp thread of "What's Trevor Done Now...".

Problems started with Trevor right from the start, with a faulty stick of ram getting returned to manufacturer after far too long breadboarding the damn thing.

Next he decided to maul our cat while he was being upgraded... (The cat jumped in the open case and put his paw in a moving fan).

Trevor has aged poorly, requiring new CMOS batteries on far too regular a basis and most of the fans have been replaced once or simply turned off as everything seems to be breaking.

Then something happened, I got excited about a game coming out... (Star Citizen for those still reading)... and Trevor got excited too, which means he now breaks more than once a week.

I've started building lists of what I want to do, however I'm desperately trying to hold off as long as possible as Star Citizen is still a twinkle in Chris Roberts eye.

Trevor however is having other thoughts, the main fan on the case has started to inconsistently pack up, which leads to him occasionally wake my wife up due to "Your Screaming Ruddy Computer"

So I started looking at quieter rigs in my build list, which is what excited me about this competition...

I would say that I made a parts list for the competition but that's a lie - I simply changed the CPU cooler to the one bundled in the competition .... here

I'm going to upgrade my gfx card next year, as currently my 7870 Tahti is coping with all I throw at it. The best PC is the one that you don't see or hear, so I will be cutting a hole between my study and my storage closet next to it and the pc will go in there. The cables will be run in grooves cut into the plastering and re-plastered into place. I know it doesn't sound that impressive, but I did this before in my old house (in Trevor's hay day) and it looked properly neat.

I know this isn't as creative as you'd expect from a competition like this, if you want to see creative just wait and see what I do with the remnants of Trevor :-) I used to work on the dolphin emulator in my spare time and that community loves to see old PC's in old consoles.

Right then guys and girls,

My idea is an update on what I have wanted to do to my current case for a while. Between this competition and inspiration I had at Dreamhack London I have finally decided that its time.
With the pending release of star wars battlefront, I have decided that I would do a star wars "Dark side" themed case.
Using the iconic "Han Solo in Carbonite" as a 3D feature on the front of the case. This would be achieved by using a resin mould being adhered to the case panel, then being blended and sprayed to give the desired effect.
The side panel would feature Darth Vader, by using a 30-40% transparency on the side window. Using printed vinyls would be the best choice to achieve this effect.
Using bright white LED strips on the interior of the case, while the Rig is being used, the light will allow the components to be viewed. While the case is off, the window vinyl should appear to be less transparent allowing the full design to be seen clearer.
I'm aware the whole Red and Black theme has been flogged to within an inch of it's life, I do however feel that it suits the overall design aspect being used.
The internals of the rig are detailed below, this is my current hardware that will be transferred to the new case with a few upgrades as it goes.

Unfortunately I cant link to any previous builds as this would be my 1st "full case mod" build. My background is in motor vehicle repair and classic car restoration. So the technical aspects required for the build are well within the scope of my skill set. Hell, you gotta start somewhere right?

Dark side build :

Define S case mods :

1/ Case to be stripped to individual panels
2/ Panels to be sprayed in a charcoal metallic, possibly satin
3/ Han solo in carbonite 3D resin relief to be created
4/ Relief to be bonded to front of case and painted and blended
5/ Section behind front case to be painted Red
6/ Side panel to have Vader printed vinyl applied
7/ Side window to have Vader vinyl (30-40% opacity) applied
8/ White LED strips to be installed behind side panel to allow visibility of components
9/ Battlefront Logo vinyl to be applied to front panel

Components :

MB : Asus ROG Maximus VII Hero
CPU : i5 4670K
RAM : TridentX 2400mhz
GPU : MSI GTX 970 4G
Cooling : Venturi Series HP-12 PWM fans and a Kelvin S24
HDD : Crucial MX100
PSU : Corsair RM750i with braided Red and Black cables

Thanks for looking and leaving some feedback would be really useful.

Ok, 1st edit :

Contemplating removing Vader and going pure "Solo" on this.

Instead of the Vinyl Vader I was considering having edge lit acrylic as the side window, and adding a line drawing of the Millennium Falcon. Here is a couple of quick Photoshops to show what i mean :

Final Edit :

After a little play around, i have decided that the Solo Carbonite resin relief should in fact be set into the front panel rather than directly on top. This will preserve the 3D Solo section yet keep the overall sleek angular shape of the case. This also solves the issue of blending the relief to the front of the case without it looking like it was merely stuck on as an after thought. Please see the final idea below :

Won't be starting my new build till the end of november, so no point in me even joining .. Best of luck, and really looking forward to seeing some nice mods here!

My Entry :)

Hm... Good things could be done on this case. I have two idea in my mind.

1. Create a show off b&w gaming rig with the usage of the following hardwares:
-MSI Z170 Krait Gaming mobo
- Intel Core i5-6600K CPU
- HyperX Fury 16GB DDR4-2666 CL16
- HyperX Predator 240GB SSD M.2
- 2×OCZ Vertex 460 240GB SSD in Raid 1
- WD Green 4TB
- XFX R9 390 DD OC 8GB
- Corsair RM750 PSU
I’d also modd the window of the case by create a custom etchwork on it and light it up with LED-s
Somthing like that:

dyJvklQ.png

B1xiB1j.png

RizeWorks
And I would cut a peace sign on the frontpanel with CNC and put a white plexi or polycarbonate on it and i would light it up with white or RGB leds. (I prefer simlicity so white led would be much better, i think) J
So in the end here is a fast sketch for you below. J

2. My second idea is to create a new rig for my Girlfriend:
- Gigabyte GA-Z170-D3H mobo
- Inltel Core i5-6600K CPU
- HyperX Fury 16GB DDR4-2666 CL16
- OCZ Vertex 460 240GB SSD
- 2×4 TB WD Green in RAID 1
- Gigabyte Gaming-4GD R9 380 4GB
- Corsair RM650 PSU

The modd would be almost the same but with different etchwork and CNC.

So I just go an Eisberg 240 and I'm not happy, the pump is too loud in my case (Pun intended)..

Since the the Eisberg and the Kelvin are expandable I'd probably join them both together into a single loop. One rad on the roof and one on the front.

The Fractal Design S Should dampen the sound of the Eisberg pump which (may go out the window any day now) also has a reservoir and would be attached to the toward the front of the case on the reservoir mounts. The Kelvin block then gets switched on to my 4790k instead.

Once the waterblocks for my 970's arrive this should make an interesting double pump/radiator custom loop combination.

I'd like to know how something like this would perform as I haven't seen anybody do it yet.

IMO i think most people are missing the point in what TTL is asking

It's not a Build comp, It's a Modding comp

Hey guys,

This is my first post here, so it is going to be little long. (Old habits die hard, used to review lot of computer hardware for various publications and also member reviews on XS, Techenclave, Guru3D etc.)

So go by the username Funky or Shripad or FunkyMonkey over various places. Some might know me as once upon a time game reviewer, GPU overclocker on Guru3D (more than a decade back). And more recently on Indian community forum Techenclave. I got more interested in overclocking and extreme ocing ( Dry Ice + ethenol and LN2 ) than modding over last 10-12 years and have done LN2 and overclocking demos for user meets organised by manufacturers like Gigabye in India.

So I will come to the point first. I have been visiting OC3D to read reviews as well as see Tiny's videos on Youtube for ages. I had registered long back once, but never posted much. No I dont even remember which email I used to register or what my id was back in a day.

Anyway, I got around to this because I am in process of building a new personal workstation rig. A proper grown up rig after a long time.

Now being from India, you hit a wall when it comes to choice of cases. Fractal Design has no presence here, neither are manufacturers like Phanteks, Thermaltake and many more. Limited NZXT and Bitfenix presence. Same with Antec. Almost full range of Cooler Master and Corsair is available, but the layout used by these manufacturers is uninspiring. Mainly because this time I was looking to build powerful system but relatively silent case that will do great job at dust filtration.
My current rig is housed in Corsair 600T which is a mess at the moment.

So far I have bought these components.

1. Intel Core i7 6700K
2. Asrock Z170 Extreme 7+ Motherboard (once again, imported it as not available locally. Asus ROG board that interest me are carrying heavy premium here and I specifically wanted to test out Extreme 7).
3. Team Dark DDR4 3000 2x8GB CL15 RAM. (This, once again sourced from US as we dont get anything over DDR4 2100 here at this moment in 2x8GB configuration)

Was going to use my existing SSDs, HDDs, PSU (Seasonic X series 750W KM3) and the Inno3D iChill Hercules X4 GTX 970 Monstrosity.

Yup this big bad boy with GTX 980 PCB with all voltage limitations removed by bios mod.

The new components are on its way to me right now. The only problem was the case. I do not want to compromise and settle for noisy case from Cooler Master or Corsair. And CM's Silencio series do not inspire me. I dont like its internal layout.
NZXT H440 is no longer in stock which was one of the options.

UPDATE : My stuff is here

Hopefully this is good enough stepping.

Testing the setup in my current age old T600 with age old Water 3.0 cooler. Sorry for blurry pic, this is quick snap from phone.

21889784262_81fc7be0f6.jpg

So I was being forced to import a case. It came down to 2 cases. Define S and Thermaltake F51 (I know how people feel about it ;) ).

The only source to import cases at reasonable cost is to order one via ebay global easy buy and it has been killing me that Define S is not available on Global Easy Buy.
Only R5 is. And that was making me opt for F51 which I really did not want to do. But I also do not want to settle for R5. And this is how I landed here.

The motherboard is Mostly black with copper accents. RAM is all black. GPU is metallic grey with same metallic grey backplate.

Plan

  • Install 240mm AIO at front of the case
  • Paint the GPU backplate White to complement the white accents of the case
  • Paint front of the case white or Let my sister do some design and get it printed on vinyl and transfer it to the front.
  • Will be painting moduvent covers white to add more white accent on the outside of the case
  • Paint the side panel black. Only the panel. Will leave the side border of the front plate black.
  • Install magnetic White LEDs on the inside to highlight hardware
  • Top moduvent covers will stay closed. I do not want noise leaking out from there.
  • Might paint the motherboard heatsinks and RAM heatspreader white if I can find platipaint(the plastic polymer paint which peals off if you want to RMA the board / RAM) cans locally.

This is roughly what it will look like without the design (which my sis will create )

21889380552_c907c6b37a_z.jpg

So as you can see, not a huge mod. I was simplistic.
I do not know if this is enough to win competition, or if it is even open to international members, it probably isnt, but I wanted to share it any way as it might get some ideas from you guys here.

Now little but about what I have done in past, how i started modding and overclocking and what I do.

Professionally I have degrees in Computer Engineering and Biomedical Engineering. I build systems for doctors mostly in my free time. It all started as a favour for one of my dad's friends and that lead to getting recommended to others and building more custom systems over last 2-3 years. I do this in my spare time a hobby and not to earn money. For that I have my own business which I run.

Being a tech enthusiast without s**tloads of money to burn in 90s and early 2000s meant I had to resort to lot of ghetto mods in past. So if you are looking for a nice, clean looking past builds from me, you wont find many. Most are pretty mundane builds with exception of couple.

The overclocker in me has meant I have had to do lot of tinkering over years. The kid in me did something really comical ages back. Have a look and have a nice laugh (this is from 2004 I think)

And yes, that is a tuk tuk radiator which I re-purposed as a fanless rad for cooling my CPU. And this was a server chassis which i brush painted black :p

Doing GPU clocking meant I had to improvise even for GPU cooling as no 3rd party cooling solutions were available here.
Going ghetto on 9800XT.

And yes, I stock AMD coolers to make heatsink and middle part as GPU cooler. Some nuts and bolts along with Arctic silver adhasive and voila. This card was once upon a time was in top 20 world wide on hwbot 3d mark rankings with volt mods.

It was about this time started reviewing manufacturer sent hardware for various forums. But still had to resort to ghetto test builds due to lack of resources to even test modern hardware. New socket motherboard? No cooler mounting available, no problem. You make do.

21679671812_5b925709e8_n.jpg

MY only personal themed build is this one. Completed in self moded Cooler Master CM690. The first generation. Years back. Custom paint, custom side window, painted fan grills, and xigmatek LED fans.

And I was really proud of this ;)

21068429484_829e2cf297.jpg

After that rig, I was constantly testing pre release hardware, reviewing lot of things so went caseless for long long time. This used to be my general setup.

21503168100_bf9071d908_n.jpg

And for short time, I did have a Lian Li build.

21070108073_9cb616198d_n.jpg

These days, this is what I do more often. (At giabyte India HQ doing trial runs of LN2 for the demo.

Easy to know who I am, I am that fatty sitting there.

And then I moved to my current rig which I actually downgraded to Ivy Bridge setup as I sold my Haswell refresh rig (4790k with MSI Z97M) just few months back to prepare for skylake. Nothing special in this.

So there you have it.

I finally want to build a good, modern, classy but simplistic rig for myself. One where I will do lot of my work, some gaming in spare time. This will be my primary rig. I will still be building this even if I dont win or am not eligible for the competition.

You know...if I was to start a project with this case and the included components, I would take on an arctic theme and choose the remaining components to complement that. Fractal Design has always carried an arctic/frozen inspired-like theme to their hardware/ Using a colour scheme of predominantly black and white. maybe with some ice-blue or plain-white custom sleeved cables for just about everything including the storage, gpu, front headers, and so on...I think it would look rather nice.

And where the case itself has such a clean aesthetic I would do too much to over-complement that. A slight paint job on the inside does cross my mind though. An ice-like effect coloured in white with tints of blue sprayed across the motherboard tray towards the edges of the case. (So it looks as though it's being frozen from the inside out.)

In terms of the rest of the colours though...RAM would have to be ice blue or white and the motherboard black or white. What's good though is that more and more gpus are taking on a white colour scheme, so choice of components isn't so difficult for colour matching.

King, could you elaborate on what you mean. Think it would help to clarify how you see the comp. I really hope what I have posted meets the "Mod" side over the "build" side. It is something i have a genuine interest in, so all the help/views I can get to guide me in the right direction would really benefit myself and others.

TTL has explain what he is looking for also some of the reg's have said it too

Fair enough dude, only asked for your input. Just figured I would ask you if I was on the right track and had not missed something, always good to have constructive criticism, can't learn if no one is willing to teach.

Good luck to whoever gets it. I do not think I have the skill set or the time to enter but if I was I would try and do a Game of Thrones "theme" as no doubt the throne will be copyrighted. so this would involve dragons and masks and stuff.

The other option I would perhaps try is a "camouflage / stealth sniper " theme in traditional multi-cam colours with etching on the glass (scope sight)

I own a dremel but have never used it on a computer case so could not say how good any of it would turn out but would be fun trying.

I like that one very much, If you would manage to make the front with actual depth you'd have a really really great custom case.

I already have a mould to use for the resin Solo, so will actually be around 3-5 mm protrusion from the case.
