Foam for HDDs?...

Hey guys,

I have been thinking of getting the S36 cpu cooler from Fractal Design into my Fractal Design Arc Mini R2.

Now my problem is that I have 2 HDDs and 2 SSDs, although the SSDs aren't an issue as they are mounted on the back of the motherboard tray.

The 2 HDDs however is though, as I want to leave out as much as possible, ie removing the HDD cage and therefore this thread... I was wondering if it could be possible to put some kind of foam on the bottom of the case and cut out, kinda like pockets in the foam for the HDDs to lay down in?... This also to help reduce any vibration and/or noise made by the HDDs.

I've looked at this video and at 7:41, the foam on the side panel looks quite softy and was wondering if you guys think that this could be a good idea?...

Or could foam potentially even be bad for the HDDs, and do you then have another solution?...

Thanks,
Chrazey

Personally I would of thought that the foam would insulate the hard drive, so would then be easy for it to overheat which can be bad as it can effect the writing and reading from the disk.

If you are just using it underneath the drive as a cushion / anti-vibration thing, then I wouldn't see any issues with it being used like that.

I have never known HDDs to heat up that much, that Foam would cause damage. I use Foam intbetween my two HDDs stacked on each other. I have had it like this for 6months now. No issues.

Wouldn't it depend on the Hard drives, The WD black drives do run hot, Well the one i have does but i guess it depends on the area your in

Can't you just raise it with something alonge the egdes, and then line the top edge of that with the foam, that way air can pass underneath, and your still getting some noise dampening.

No biggie?, risk of damaging a £170 HDD lol...

No. Its the risk of spending x amount of pennies on some foam.

Do you constantly transfer tonnes of data meaning the hdds are always running flat out? If so then get a dedicated hdd 5.25 caddy.

Just get a NAS or something if you want to hide your HDDs. Better yet just get rid of them.

I would advise getting some proper sound deadening material. There's stuff that you use on car floors for car audio..

It's basically like a pitch tar material sticky on the bottom with silver covering. The good part is that you don't need to completely cover the bottom of your drive. A couple of decent sized bits stuck below the motor would do a great job of absorbing the sound the drive makes.

I'm in the "Don't completely cover the bottom" camp. IMO it will endanger the drive. I've had numerous hard drives die due to poor cooling. It really doesn't take long to throw a bearing when they get too hot and then your platter becomes unstable causing damage to the head.

A bit dead thread, but found something that I wanted to ask about...

So can this be used to sort of "wrap in" the HDD?...

Can this be used as silencing an HDD?... in the bottom of the case, if you remove the HDD cage, to have an awesome dual 140's free airflow over to the graphics card(s).

Hope you guys don't mind a small revive here...
